Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Issue With Internet Explorer - Please Assist!

I have finished up my database and am having several people in the office look it over. However, when they go to open the page in internet explorer, it brings up the database but does not execute the search or clear my search criteria. It works just fine in Chrome and Firefox. Does anyone have any ideas why it wouldn't work in IE? I am working off IE9. I am hoping to get this resolved right away, especially since most of our customers use IE as their browser.

Lindsay, as much as people in the msgboard like to help, it would be impossible to guess what your problem is as you hardly have any details in your help request.

Re: Issue With Internet Explorer - Please Assist!

      Juan,

Thank you for your input. I have included a screen shot of the searchable database I have created. The purpose of the database is to allow our customers to search through thousands of articles based on certain criteria. So, when I said that it doesn't execute the search, what I meant is that when the user goes in to search under certain criteria (i.e. Commercial, Colorado, USA, Female) and clicks the search button, nothing happens. The data stays the same. Also, when they go to click "Clear Search Criteria" it also does nothing and the criteria already chosen stays there. I am not sure why this issue only comes up in Internet Explorer. I have used it with Chrome, Firefox, and Safari and all of them work just fine.

      Thanks.Database Example.PNG

        Lindsay,

That is a simple grid with a search part, use then all the time with-out any difficulties on all the browsers you mention. What version is the IE, also do you have the latest Alpha? Wish I could help you more, but this does not make any sense to me either.

          Juan,

Thanks for the reply. I am running off of Internet Explorer 9, which I believe is the most recent version. I also have the most updated version of Alpha, v11. I can't understand why it won't work in IE, hopefully there may be someone who has experienced this as well and can guide me. Thanks so much for the help.

Have you tried resetting ie9 to see if that clears the issue?

              Lindsay,

              ... people in the office...
Is this happening to only people in this particular office using IE? Does it work in IE at your home? Another location? The reason I ask is that if this company's IT dept. has made IE the default browser, they may also have made changes to the settings that are preventing your app from working as designed. It's the only thing I can think of at the moment as all my A5 apps work just fine in IE 8 and 9, including the exact search functionality you describe.

              Cheers!

Re: Issue With Internet Explorer - Please Assist!

I do not think this is rare. Internet Explorer causes so many issues with java script. It has gotten to the point that when a user calls and says that a search won't work, or a lookup won't work, etc, I almost automatically ask if they are using IE, and when they say yes (they almost always say yes when there are these types of errors), and I tell them to use Firefox or Chrome, and it works. Happened so often that I gave up trying to figure the cause - always assumed it was because IE uses a different flavor of javascript than the other browsers. I go as far as telling users that I do not recommend IE and I give them a link to download Mozilla. I know this does not help solve your issue, but I wanted to share that I too have had many people tell me they have issues using IE ...

Thanks for all the responses! I have tried resetting my browser settings. Unfortunately, the search function still does not work. I haven't tried it from a computer outside of our office, so I will try to do that later today. Not sure why IE has to be the troublemaker.

Re: Issue With Internet Explorer - Please Assist!

Not sure what to do. We have had several people review the database online from their personal computers and everyone is having the same problem. Unfortunately, most of our customers are using IE and there is no way we can change that. Is there no possibility that I have something in my database that is preventing it to work in IE? We have put so many hours into this database that if we can't get it to work in IE we will have to switch to another software. Which I really don't want to do.

Sounds like something the folks at Alpha Software would want to know about. Have you submitted a formal bug report? ( via the Help menu in Alpha Five ).

Consider too that sometimes an unrelated Javascript error causes other Javascript on the page to then fail. See if you can determine any Javascript errors on the page--in Firefox it's Ctrl+Shift+J; not sure the comparable in IE9 but I'm sure there is one...

Thanks for the input, Tom. I will certainly let them know about it. Not sure why I'm one of the few to experience it.

We did just discover today that it executes perfectly in IE8. So now I'm wondering if it's an issue with settings in IE9. I will post something to the Help menu.

Try running ie9 in comparability view mode.

Thank you, Bill. That does work. I will have to look at the value of possibly adding a disclaimer to our page that will link to directions for our customers to use compatability view.
