Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can't create reports using a set

I am able to create reports if I use an individual table, however, when I try to create a report using the set, I get this error message:

    Script:UI_DLG_BOX:@=quickReport_title_var_163929472 line:179
    Setupfieldlists (def, inst)
unexpected expression type in FOR EACH
    Type is '/'
    Expression is 'inst.fieldsettings'

Can anyone help me figure out what this error is and how I can create reports using the set? Thanks!

Re: Can't create reports using a set

Given the lack of responses to the original post three years ago this doesn't seem to be a common problem. Perhaps you have something unusual in your set definition?

Is this a report for one particular set or any set? Can you define a report on a set in the AlphaSports sample?
      There can be only one.

Re: Can't create reports using a set

Please walk us through the steps you're following and tell us when it breaks.

I've just created a quick report using the alphasports sample, with the report based on the invoice set. So it seems the program is running correctly.

Help us understand what you're doing differently.

And, please confirm you're working on desktop with native alpha five data, not a web project, right?

Strange. That's not a usual issue. I don't have that problem.

Tell us more about your steps to get this message.

          1. What build are you on?

          2. What is the overall computer environment?

          3. Can you build a report on a set within AlphaSports?

Given this thread the build can be very important.

Alpha Five Version 11 Developer Edition Build 3381
            System Addins Build 4096

            Windows 7 SP1

In report tab Right click Report >> New >> testnewb_a5.set (this is our main production set)

I get the following error (which has slightly different parameters I see)

            Script: UI_DLG_BOX: @quickReport_title_var_083144025 line:181
            SeupFieldLists(def,inst)
            Unexpected expression Type FOR EACH
            Type is '\'
            Expression is 'inst.fieldSettings'

Press OK and the quick report system functions but every report generated using it has odd issues - losing fields I wanted displayed, just too many issues to be reliable or usable. I can set up reports for this set without the quick report system and they are fine.

There are several dozen sets we can create reports on without problems using the quick report writer. It just so happens the particular set that throws an error (testnewb_a5.set) is our main set and has about 65% of our active reports and forms. So it would be nice if the feature worked.

Care to share the structure of the set?

                  Is referential integrity enabled?

Are others using the database while the report is being created?

Hmmm.... Have you backed up and then packed this set?

While you can have a lot of objects in a set, you may not want to. I find that a form and a report may need a slightly different set tuned to it's own needs.

So the reports that are part of this set were built with the quick report writer before this error occurred or with another option?

You may try a divide and conquer approach by duplicating the set and building reports in the duped set.

Sometimes a duplicate with remove unusual errors in a set.

An example (as requested by Tom) will fill in a lot of gaps in understanding.

Just wanted to mention, I had the same exact issue when trying to create a new report on a set. It was resolved after packing the set as Al suggested.
