Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    More PDF problems

    OK,
I've solved my first issue here: http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...f-Grid-to-Work

Now I have two new problems.

    1. When one person is veiwing a record, another person can not save a new .pdf file over the current one. An error is displayed that it's "in use".

How do I let others preview these files but not open the file off of the network drive? This becomes a big problem when someone leaves their program open on a record and I need to update a drawing. I'd have to search all over the plant and call our other locations to see who has it open and tell them to close it.

    2. How can I stamp a .pdf with the date, username, and released status upon attempting to print?

I've seen various methods for this but I'm a newbie here and I'm looking for the easiest one that works with Alpha. Maybe some simple javascript? Hopefully reader independent as well. I use foxit almost exclusively and others may use adobe or others.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: More PDF problems

I tried another work around today by making a button that would pop up a window to view a pdf document. That doesn't work. I selected "edit onClick event" and had it open a pdf document. In the filename for the pdf document I have {File_location}. Unfortunately, when the window pops up I get a "can't display page" error. When I check the link it's trying to get to it looks messed up. It has percentage signs places where "/" should be and generally screws up the whole link.

I don't have this problem with my small bit of javascript that I wrote for my iframe and that still works so something in the alpha 5 software must be messing the link up. Could it be that I'm running in preview mode?

When I save the window as a shorcut, here's what the garbbled link comes out looking like:
    Code:
    res://ieframe.dll/dnserrordiagoff_webOC.htm#file:///P:%255CSecured%255CReleasedPDF%255CWorkflow%255CDAVID%255CN%255C00006081.pdf
Here's what it SHOULD look like:
    Code:
    P:\Secured\ReleasedPDF\Workflow\DAVID\N\00006081.pdf
Now that I look at it again %255C must be unicode or something for a "/". Maybe it's not being recognized?

Anyway, if I can get the preview pop-up to work I may ditch my preview iframe and just use it instead to make things faster for the user. I have no clue how to fix these issues though.

        Hi dantum,

First, I've upgraded to V11 since this post so I'm not sure if all the options are availlable.

Is your problem #1 or #2? For number one I now have the server send a download of the file instead of linking directly to it. Acomplishing that wasn't really clear to me until I had the app server up and running the way it should be. If you are messing about in preview mode with the app server running on your local machine some things that work or don't work are the opposite when you have the app server running on a web server.....intranet or internet.

For #2 one of our I.T. guys wrote a .jar file that does the stamping of the .pdf. It's executed by java.exe through an xbasic command on the alpha server. I don't know much about the actual java code other than the variables that need to be passed in to it; however, the alpha side of things (passing the variables and executing the command) I have explained in a thread on the V11 forum so you can check that out here: http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...by-the-browser
