Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

***FRUSTRATED***** Application Server Stops working Daily

Out of no where the application server started generating this error:

    Error running Grid:
Error computing Search Part filter expression.
An unhandled exception (c0000005) was generated.

The only method to get the application server to behave properly again is to Stop the service, close the application server, restart the application server, and start the service. Everything was running fine for quite some time and now this has started happening.

Note the application server is a Virtual Machine. All other servers running in my VM Cluster are running fine without issue. No errors or alarms both on the Virtual Machine and the Virtual Hosts. Nothing in event viewer either. My gut feeling points to the Alpha Application server as the Search Grid has not been changed or modified in 16 days.

    Any ideas? Suggestions?

    Thanks...
    Joe

Before this started happening did you update your server with any Alpha Five patches, or alter the database table that the grid is built on?

Re: ***FRUSTRATED***** Application Server Stops working Daily

My suggestion is also to verify the application server and the A5 program are of the same build. If you've updated one or the other, but not both perhaps that is where the error is coming from. I haven't run across this kind of error, so I'm just guessing.

There is also another post mentioning this same error: http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...light=alwaysup, but it doesn't say if it was resolved.

I'm using the AlwaysUp program in tandem with my WAS, and haven't had any problems since. My WAS is also running on a client's VM, and the AlwaysUp program can be configured to notify if the server shuts down or was restarted so I can check it out. I have AlwaysUp configured to reboot the WAS around 2am every morning (when I know my client won't be using the application), just to make sure the WAS doesn't get hung up.

Don't know if this will help your particular situation or not...

Thanks for the replies. Current builds in use are V11 Build 2765-3967 on the Developer and v11 2765-3967 on the APP Server.

No table structure changes to the two tables associated with the Grid.

I've read a lot about AlwaysUp but I have not tried it yet. I'm going to download it now...either way it should crash daily. I've application servers running Apache that run for months on end without a hiccup. I understand they are moving to IIS but still...

I just read the link you had posted...it doesn't really point to an answer. It does say that one user gets it after Always up Restarts the service....

That is irrelevant and will not help you resolve the issue*. You need to debug the grid itself, running on the latest build. You need to turn on the logs, especially the Error log and the Xbasic Stack log and either force an error to take place, or wait for it to happen, and then review the logs. If that does not help you need to test by patching back to a previous build (would help if you knew when you patched up, and when the error started).

*Because you are not running an Alpha Five app under Apache.

Re: ***FRUSTRATED***** Application Server Stops working Daily

Understood but if nothing has changed on the Grid, I haven't patched since the latest build was released (Jun 30th install), and the issue started Monday then it makes it hard to believe the Grid is the issue or dB given the table structure associated with the Grid has not changed.

Restarting the Application server "fixes" the issue. So to my point and the fact that you have to use AlwaysUp to manage the instability issues with the application server. This is not to start a argument or a flame war at the Application Server more to the frustration of it.

By the same logic, since the App Server had not changed, it cannot be that either. Debugging is always the same process, you start with it could be anything and work your way through it.

Only a few posts ago I posted a "problem with the latest build" and then told a Developer who responded to my post that it could not be my syntax because nothing changed. That attitude kept me from looking at the code for a long time. Once I started to debug including code, I found the error. It was not really a syntax error, but it was incompatible code that only caused a problem under particular conditions under the latest build.

I'm looking at the logging setup now...I'm not going to enable until the issue happens again. I would be nice if you could turn on Access and Error logging individually the same as the Debug logging.

I'll be honest...I don't have a whole lot of "custom" coding on the grid. I'm still pretty much "green".

Re: ***FRUSTRATED***** Application Server Stops working Daily

I had a similar issue last night after updating to the latest BETA build. To correct the problem I performed 2 tasks so I don't know which one corrected it. The A5 Server did not lock up, but I started receiving a grid error, that was working fine just prior to the update.

First, I reverted back to the previous released build. I then edited the grid, and refreshed the connection to the SQL Database that the grid is based on. Performing these 2 tasks fixed the problem. Worth a try, no?

@411tech...thanks. Definitely worth a shot. I just edited the grid, refreshed the dB connection, and re-published. It would be sweet if it was that simple. Does anyone know if alpha has a list of what their exception codes mean? In other words if I get a message with an id in a log file (MS world EventId) I can research that in the KB or Google and get a ton of info. "unhandled exception (c0000005)" is fairly generic and searches lead you all over the place.

Thanks Reed...its complaining about my Search Part Filter Expression...I'm trying to compile enough information to ask Alpha a question directly. Even if I have to open a pay incident. My log files are not helping me. Do you have a Search Part Filter Expression too? How have you been handling this if it has been happening for a year? AlwaysUp? Sorry for the 20's.
