Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Have you tried disabling smtp authentication and attempting it at that point?

Also, as far as logging in concerned. You may not see the events you are expecting depending on the level of logging you have set.

Just an off the wall thought.

Check to see if the smtp timeout needs to be adjusted.

I have an application that fails sometimes, yets succeeds if I manually rerun it.

I tested with telnet, and found that it was taking my smtp server just over 5 seconds to respond.
My timeout setting was at 5 seconds. I increased the timeout value to 10, and this seems to have
        solved the problem.

Yes, I can relay fine between the A5 web server and E2K3 box. I have not disabled SMTP authentication. The mail server is a legacy production mail server...I'd rather not get to touchy with it. Once we've upgraded and migrated I'll be more comfortable with making system changes. I don't need all of our offices throughout the US down for any reason.

            Sorry Joe,

I was referring to within your A5 project properties, removing the information you entered for authentication. Since you have added it to the relay list you can bypass authentication and see if you achieve a different result. Would not suggest making such a change on your mail server.

            Thanks

Re: Web Project Properties - E-Mail Config...

Gotcha...yes. I did try that. Even with the Free Simple SMTP server that I posted above as it does not require authentication. With that software you can see the actual connections as they happen in the console of the software. Again...Telnet...you see the connectivity. Alpha nothing. I'm tempted to try the Beta but fearful of what might break.

Are you willing to share your project so that I can take a closer look? Or do you feel confident at this point with the testing you've done that it's definitely an issue with your A5 installation?

Just to say it once more. My servers were working fine with SMTP, Microsoft update did run, since then SMTP will all open port but not send emails, another server using the March build official release, was working fine, since the MS Update it has now stopped working.

                    Pete,

I know this sounds crazy, but have you checked to see
if maybe its reaching the timeout limit ?

I'm not talking about a long delay. Default timeout is
5 seconds; setting the timeout to 7 seconds yesterday
ended months of frustration for me.

I have just installed Build 2817- 3979- Released - 23-Jul-2012 - 8:02 AM and the issue is resolved. No idea what was going on or why the March Build does not work - but good to see it working. Thanks to those at Alpha for the solution.

Pete...we do not have the patch you've linked to installed so I do not believe your issue is/was the same as ours. Are you running the pre-release build in production?

SMTP timeout...are you speaking about the Default SMTP server in Exchange?

no... Alpha5 has a timeout setting for smtp that defaults at 5 seconds.
The testing I did with my setup got a response from my smtp server later
than 5 seconds, but sooner than 6 seconds.
After I adjusted the timeout value, my emails are going out again.

Ok...maybe I'm missing something. If I'm setting the Project Properties doesn't that bypass or supersede any settings on the Application Server? I thought the Application Server Mail settings were a legacy component and were going away with the Alpha Application server.

One of the bad things about project properties is that I don't see a default network timeout for smtp.
The code below sends a simple test email.
The way its' setup, you'll need a small dbf table, but nothing major.
If you don't want to setup the table, just put in the appropriate values.

It is set to display the number of seconds it takes to open a smtp
                              connection.
Anything more than 5 most likely means you're running into a timeout value.

                              Hope this helps,

Thank you Greg...honestly this is a bit above me but I think I see what you are doing. The table just holds the values for the server, port, username, etc.

I was originally using straight HTML to send the message using mailto, body, subject, to, tags. This bombed out if a value contained the "&" symbol as the html &body, &subject expected to see something else.

                                Thanks
