Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to display an image file in a dialog from a Image File Reference Field

    I want to display a previous uploaded image in a dialog.

    I am using SQL database, and the filename reference is stored on the table, not the BLOB image object.

    How can I display the image on a dialog using the image reference field that contais the image filename?

    Thank you...

    Quite certain you can't yet.

      I'm quite certain this can be done, but I don't have enough time to get all the details straight for an example.

      Very generally, you can set a static text control, with this in it:

      Code:
      <div id="picture"></div>
      Then, you should be able to find an event to do something like this, with mypicturename derived from the value in the dialog control that contains the correct image reference:

      Code:
      jtxt = <<%a%
      var imgID = $('picture');
      $svs(imgID, '<img src="**foo**">';
      %a%

      jtxt = stritran(jtxt, "**foo**", mypicturename)

      e.javascript = js_escape(jtxt)
      I do this quite a bit for things like FusionCharts, iFrame sources and other objects - just don't have an example at hand or time to offer you a perfect solution right now.

      And, watch, someone will come along with an even simpler straight-forward method.

        Steve's method is great for many things, so keep it handy. But he is right - there is a simpler way.
        Just insert an image control into the dialog.
        The trick is getting the path right so that it is viewable when published.
        It may take some trial and error, and inspecting with firebug.
        I like my query to spit out the correct path, so I usually add some "path" text before the filename in the query statement.

          I'm having no luck getting my images to display in the Dialog when referencing the filename path as a placeholder.
          If I hard code the filename path then the image displays okay, so I know it's not the path itself, rather the implementation.

          I assume {Placeholder} can't be used to reference the image in a Dialog, but surely there must be an easy way to assign the path.

            How I have done it in the past is design a grid only to show the images and the id, embed the grid in the dialog and make it a live link based on the id. Hope it helps - like I said earlier the dialog just does not do it from what I can see. remove everything from the grid and make is simple also set the border of the grid to none in the inline style.

              Try it relative to the web server root: "./SubDir/image.jpg"

                Re: How to display an image file in a dialog from a Image File Reference Field

                I've tried to reference the file using variables, to assign the full path, etc, but as Stephen and Peter observed, it does not work on dialogs.
                I will try to embed a simple grid with the image.
                Thank you guys for help me!

                  Hello Cezar,

                  As Andy says, it is possible to have the image displayed in a dialog. But if you store the image location as a relative path to the server root, you need to pay attention that the server root is not the same in all views of your component (I mean Working Preview, Live Preview and Server View).

                    Believe me - linking the grid is the best solution - just try it - Alpha will change this.. but for now just do it and see.

                      Hi Pete,

                      Thanks for your suggestion, I'm giving it a try. Not quite sure what you mean by "make it a live link based on the id".
                      Any chance you could show a couple of screenshots perhaps?

                        I've tested Pete's solution, and it worked for me. It is the fast and easy way!
                        Thanks Pete!

                            Hi Guys,

                            I gave up trying to display a picture in the dialog too, also Selwyn mentioned it will be fix in a future release, so proceeded to used the embedded grid with the live link for now, but I am confronting the problem that at times when navigating from record to record the image will not load, do not know if it is a timing issue or what. It does not do it all the time, nor at the same record. Just to double check I verified all my pictures were in the correct location.

                            Anyone has any ideas?

                              Force it to refresh in the onchange.
