Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How can I pass information from one grid to another where the grids are not linked?

Hi All! I have read help documentation, watched videos, googled and searched the forum but everything I have found is a little too advanced for me. I am hoping someone has an easy solution and can dummy it down for me.

Here is what I am trying to do:

I have two grids. Both grids are sql tables. One is a training baseline grid that has each person listed once with a total number of completed hours for eligible training. Each person has a manager name, manager email, BU Lead name, BU Lead email, POC name and POC email. The primary key is the employees id (we call shortname).

The second grid is a training detail grid which has each person listed multiple times along with course name, completion date, total hours to complete, manager name, manager email, BU Lead name, BU Lead email, POC name and POC email. The primary key is the employees id (we call shortname) along with course title and completion date.

I am trying to figure out a way to pass the manager name, manager email, BU Lead name, BU Lead email, POC name and POC email from the Training Baseline grid (whenever there is a change) to the Training Detail grid. The connection between the two grids would be the employees id (shortname).

I did try adding a link to the Training Baseline grid fields and added the fields mentioned but when I do that then I cant filter the "Training Baseline" grid based on the manager, BU lead or POC names. Ive tried to follow the videos to do an ajax callback and dialog but I cant seem to get it right and I'm about to give up.

Can anyone please help me figure this out or walk me through what I need to do?

    Thank you!
    Sue

Re: How can I pass information from one grid to another where the grids are not linke

    hello
there are two items to note.
1> true fact as it happened, for example manager's name and email at the time the employee took the course being retained
2> current fact as it is, for example updated manager's name and email regardless who supervised the employee.
    number 1 is better.
if this is what you want then add a field in the second table as manager_id and use lookup to fill the name and email address.
if that is not what you want and follow the number 2
use sql select statement and combine those two table and select all the fields from each table and build the grid. that will show you what you have in each table at the current moment.
hope this is what you are looking for.

Re: How can I pass information from one grid to another where the grids are not linke

      Thank you Gandhi!

I really want a combination. I want the information as it happened BUT if the manager changes (since this activity is on-going and will be monitored for at least a year to ensure employees are taking the necessary training required for their job) then the manager needs to be able to see the information for his/her employee. So basically, whenever the manager, BU Lead or POC names change on that baseline grid then that change does need to be reflected on the Training Details grid so the manager BU Lead or POC that has access to the person is able to see all the information.

We are planning on doing the sql statement in the background if I can't get something in alpha to work. I prefer trying in alpha since I know this will come up again.

Any other ideas will be greatly appreciated!!

      Thanks again!

Re: How can I pass information from one grid to another where the grids are not linke

This is absolutely doable in Alpha. This is the power of the grid. Or you can use a grid which calls the detail view and then have a tab that calls a grid.
It seems like the design of the tables may not be normalized. If I understand what you’re saying, do you really need to keep all that duplicate info in the detail table? That would just be a look up to the manager table.
It sounds like what you may need is a cross reference table to link Managers to Staff or at least a column in the staff table to set who the manager is.

          hello
i am attaching a txt file created with notepad. the steps are so elementary.
you may be an expert in sql etc., since it is not clear from your post i am taking this steps.
if this is very basic and all of these you know already, my apologies.

Re: How can I pass information from one grid to another where the grids are not linke

Thank you Gandhi! I am definitely not an expert in Sql or Alpha - I just get by ;o)

I'm still not sure that is what I want. I need to the grids to be separate. Two separate tables and unforntately we need the details listed out so the managers can see the detail so I have two separate grids that are fed by a sql table in the background. I have to pass the current manager, BU Lead and POC Names from the baseline table to the training detail table without linking the two tables.

LEE - can you say more about the cross reference table idea? I do need all that detail in the training detail table because both grids are filtered on manager, bu lead or poc names. If I don't know that information then I can't filter the grid. Due to privacy etc. we need the grids filtered.

I am open for any ideas - I know this can be done but I'm such a beginner that I don't even know where to start.

              Thank you!!!!

I made a quick video. This is how I use the cross reference table: http://www.screencast.com/t/J8mVTK6TN
