Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Printer error:preview hdcPrn is Null

I am still having random issues with "preview and/or print"

I recieve the following error message "Printer error:preview hdcPrn is Null" or "Printer error:print hdcPrn is Null"

I am using Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit, with a Dell laser printer hooked up with a USB cable

    Alpha Five Ver 11 Build 2765 3967

My "AlphaFivePrinterV4p5" (Amyumi Document Converter 450) printer port is set to "Null"

There is another printer installed from Alpha "Amyuni Document Converter" ("Amyumi Document Converter 400")

When the error happens, about half the time I can close Alpha Five and restart it and then I can print. Sometimes it take a computer restart to be able to print out of Alpha Five.

No other programs have issues with printing on this laptop and printer

Any ideas on what may be causing this?

    Thanks
    Tony

    Hi, Tony.

Don't have experience with this particular error.

You've probably already done these things but here are some ideas for you:

    a) does the problem ever occur using a different printer?

    b) does the problem ever occur when "saving as" pdf?

    c) have you tried replacing the usb cable? using a different usb port?

    d) have you checked with Dell to see if there are updated firmware or driver packages you could download and install?

    e) has Dell offered an explanation for the error you're getting?

      Hi Tom!

      a) I have tried two different printers (Dell 2350dn and Dell 2350d)
      b) No, never happened, but I do very little "saving as pdf"
      c) Yes, I have tried two different cables
      d) No, I have not contacted Dell, But I really don't think it is a "Dell Printer" problem. Even when I can't print in Alpha Five, I can always print a test page or print using Excel or Word.

      Thanks
      Tony

Might this be related to the specific report? Do you have the same issue with other reports?

Is Microsoft OneNote installed on your machine?

Are you using "layout table reports" or the traditional "free form" banded reports?

Does the problem ever happen with the reports in AlphaSports?

              Tom

              I have un-installed MS OneNote

I am using reports that were designed in Alpha Five 10.5

Yes, when I am getting the error message, reports in AlphaSports also will not print

I have not un-installed Alpha Five Ver 11 and re-installled, maybe that would be worth a try?

                Good morning, Tony.

I asked about "layout table reports" since they're a new feature in v.11. When I searched for other message board threads discussing the error you are getting the only ones I found dealt with this new feature. No one else is posting questions about this issue. Makes me wonder about your laptop, or possibly your printers.

I suggest you see if you can trigger the fault again, now that you've uninstalled OneNote.

I'd also check with Dell's website to see if they have any driver updates for your laptop, or your printers.

I also had this problem with a 64-bit computer and trying to print to a networked Xerox phaser printer. Exact same error, equally random. I never was able to solve it, had to give the user his own printer. I believe he still has the problem from time to time but not as often. It only happens with A5 reports, not with PDFs or anything else on the machine.

Thanks for the reply and the information.
I have uninstalled and re-installed Alpha and also deleted anything in the "devices and printers" that appeared to have anything to do with Alpha Five and noticed after the re-install of Alpha that the "Amyuni Document Converter" printer is not installed, only the "AlphaFivePrinterV4p5" printer.
                    Maybe this will help
                    Thanks again,

                      Tony,

                      Try the following.
                      Open the report in design.
Go to report properties (right click on report)
Go to the tab Printer. Set it to Use default printer

I've had this error - and it seems to be related to using Logmein. But restarting the computer always fixes it.

Martin, does that mean restarting the computer without logmein running? What did you find that suggests Logmein is involved? Thanks.

                            Hi Tom,
I can't positively say it is Logmein, but that seems to be what was in common with the error.
And I found when I got it I had to restart to get rid of it. Logmein will by default, when you log on to someone else's computer, make your computer the default printer on the other computer. (And is some instances, when you log off, leave that as the default on the other person's computer - requiring the user to reset the default dcomputer.) Thus I have suspected that is the culprit, even though my default printer was still correct.

But in all cases, restarting fixed it. But I have Logmein running in the sense that it is in the tray after restarting.
