Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Question regarding Alpha 5 V11 Licensing

2 machines per license with the understanding the licencee is the only user of both licenses. Like almost every other software license.

Re: Question regarding Alpha 5 V11 Licensing

Thanks for the quick resp Stan.

So I could "temporarily" install the Developer software on my personal machine so I can do my development (modifying their V4 app to run under V11) and then when I'm complete I could un-license my machine? This way the client could retain both of their licenses (or do I even need to install V11 on their laptop that just reads their database read-only)?

        Yes.

Yes. without Alpha on a machine you can't view the database.
        There can be only one.

Nice. I think my plan might actually work.

One (hopefully last) question, if my client has an old XP laptop running V4 which is read-only to the database, can they continue to use this while their main machine which will be Windows 7 and V11 accesses the same database? I' hoping the dbf files can be read by both versions of AlphaFive (one as read-only and one as update)?

That will work for data access. As soon as you make any changes employing V11 specific features the forms, browses, etc will likely not display properly. This may be as simple as a color change to the background where the color name didn't exist in V4.
            There can be only one.

The application I'm rewriting will run on my son's computer at his store. Alpha Five will obviously be installed there. However, I do all the development work at my home and will need the software installed on my computer here as well. Finally, I have a backup computer at my home and like to have all important software on both my computers.

From a cost management point of view I cannot afford to purchase 2 or 3 licenses at $300 to $350 a pop so that my son can use it on a single computer.

Do any of you know with certainty whether I'm permitted to do this with a single license? As a related question does Alpha Software use an activation scheme a la Microsoft which monitors the use of the license or, worse, restricts the license to a specific system? I'd like to believe there's some good faith here.

If those of you who know the answer are uncomfortable posting it, could you send me a private message?

              Thanks in advance ... Sam

If you are just going to run it on two computers then you should be fine but if you want to run it on more than 2, buy the unlimited run-time and then you can run it on as many computers as you want. You do not need to install Alpha 5 Developer on each machine and in fact that can be disastrous because even if you use control.hide and they figure out how to use ctrl/shift to get around the startup stuff, they can get in and start messing with the app. The run-time is the way to go on all machines except the development machine.

              Just my opinion.

You can turn off ctrl/shift. You can also put a stop in the auto exec that if not version11(or what ever), it will kick them out.

The only way to get into one of my apps is when it goes to the main form, you have to have button or something to let you get to the cp/ws. If the startup form messes up, developer to the given form and create a button to show cp.

You could simply install the RunTime on their machine if all they want is read only. It would also ensure the app is not changed. The unlimited RunTime has nothing to do with the limit of two machines. You could have the development license on your machine and install the RT on as many machines as you want and still have 1 vacancy for the license.
                  TYVM :) kenn

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

You can turn it of on the machine you turned it off on but it will still work on another machine unless you bring it up and turn it off on that machine. At least that is what happened when I tried it before. And since you can bypass the autoexec with ctrl/shift....

Of course the database is still both read / write.
