Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Question regarding Alpha 5 V11 Licensing

Thanks for this information, Stan. It's good to know the info is there for the future. Since I don't have the installed runtime directory, I'll assume I don't have this capability.

Stan, while I have your attention, an unrelated question. I looked at the AlphaSprts menu system briefly and understand what they're up to. Can you tell me how they get their menu form to come up automatically? Also, I select it from the intro splashscreen. If that screen were not there to select it as a previous workspace, would it still have come up first thing when Alpha Five is launched?

Re: Question regarding Alpha 5 V11 Licensing

The contents, when Alpha decodes them when you start the program, allow for a check that the computer running the program is "legal".
This means that Alpha compares the computer name encoded in the activation.key file against the current computer name. No match, no go.

any user changing their computer name, and many do, will find that Alpha won't work any longer
If you say so. I've never had any reason to change it. If you know changing it will deactivate Alpha, good reason not to change it. The benefit is that if you upgrade your computer to a newer model and use the same name, Alpha will work on it.

Stan, that documentation says click File->Database Properties in Control Panel.

My Control Panel doesn't have "File" in the Menu. Could that be because I'm not licensed? Your tip sounds great if I could use it.

You don't have File, View, Layout, etc in the top left corner?

And it might be Workspace Properties in the latest vernacular.

Mine is different from yours, Stan. Either mine is configured differently or it's a version difference.
My Control Panel window is inside another window which has the "File" link in its menu. I wasn't looking there.
              Have a look:

You haven't maximized the control panel within the Alpha window for one. You're using the Icons view rather than the detail view for the other. See the small orange box next to the Delete toolbar button? Click three places to the right on the Details choice.

Re: Question regarding Alpha 5 V11 Licensing

Thanks. The Details view didn't throw me off, it was the maximizing. About once a day I allow a program to run fullscreen (habit and preference) and less frequently do I maximize an inner window.

I'll blame Microsoft for my not understanding you. When the inner window is maximized the outer window then assumes its name. The outer window with the "File" link is really not the Control Panel even though Bill Gates says it is.

Is it on my computer? What's its name? Can I use it to create run-time apps if I only own the basic $350 product?
It's name is Alpha Installer. No! You will solve a lot of mysteries by doing as Stan suggests, check the documentation.

Ken, I'm new at this and I saw from Stan's graphic that the software is called "InstallMaker", not "Alpha installer". I didn't know they were the same. I thought the latter was a generic term for installing Alpha Five.

You asked me to check the documentation. Please tell me what you wanted me to look at or search for. Stan's graphic of the documentation referred to a feature I couldn't find in my installation. I didn't know, Ken, that Alpha's distributed documentation doesn't apply to all users. Perhaps I should have known but I'm sorry, I didn't.

Re: Question regarding Alpha 5 V11 Licensing

InstallMaker and Alpha Installer are not the same. The first is an excellent program, more bells and whistles than Alpha's built in installer. I suspect most folks who create a runtime app use InstallMaker. My comment about checking the documentation wasn't for a particular subject, rather to have a look at it and see what's in there. As with most software documentation, there is a getting started section which would serve you well to review. While it may produce more questions, it will answer many others.

I have used Alpha5 in corrporate enviroment for several decades, yes decades, when I go through a computer upgrade cycle my new computer always has a new machine name not of my choice. I have always been able to contact Alpha software and explainthe situation and they have reset the lincense count. This is done at their discretion and only happens every few years so this is not a way of getting extra lincenses.

I wasn't implying that Alpha isn't helpful, Paul. The new activation process simply made me cautious that if they "went away" what would happen to my license in the future.

My head is spinning from this thread although I think the answer might be pretty simple:

my client has purchased AlphaFive V11 Developer Edition (upgrading from V4) where they run a desktop application, no web front-end at all. How many machines can I install V11 on with the license key I received? I'd like to install it on their main desktop where they currently run V4 and a laptop they also use as read-only to their database, but I'd also need to install it on my machine so I can get the V4 app working under V11 (I'm anticipating lots of coding changes with such a version leap).

Can I load V11 Developer on this many machines? Also, once I am compete with the upgrade, is this all my client will need to run their app or will they need any additional AlphaFive software?

                              Thanks!

The only additional software would be the Runtime if they want multiple users/workstations that access the database.
