Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Lookup data from a table and display it in a grid build on a different table

I have created a readonly grid based on the following table structure.

    ID
    Date
    Field3
    Field4

The ID is a primary key in multiple tables. A second table structure is:

    ID
    Fname
    Lname
    Field4
    Field5

In the grid that I created, how can I show the Fname and Lname instead of the
Value in the ID field. I tried using a calculated field and a lookup, but I couldnt get that to work correctly.

Im a desktop developer and Im trying to do some web projects. Im not sure if Im going about this the right way.

Are you willing to hide the ID column, showing only the first name and last name?
    dbf or sql ?

I'm working with a dbf table. I have no need to see the ID column and would like to hide the ID.
I've just learned that there is a display data option called view. I haven't had a chance to explore this but it looks like it may be what I am looking for.

You won't need a view for that.
You can either choose not to put the ID column into the grid,
or you can check the Hide Column box.

          Gregg,

          Thank you for your response.

I do not think that I have clearly stated what Im trying to do.

Im familiar with the desktop side of Alpha. Im use to creating sets and building forms and browses from sets. It appears that grids are created from single tables.

Im trying to build a grid linking the data from two tables on the primary key of the two tables. This is probably wrong, but its whats done on the desktop side all the time.

I want a grid with a single row showing the name and company from table 2, then linked on the primary key, a date, notes and a checkbox from table 1.

Views appear to be similar to sets on the desktop side. At first glance, views seem to be what I want. However; now Im having trouble joining fields together. I want to join the salutation, fname, lname and suffix into one field called name. I tried creating a calculated field in the client side properties. It worked great until I clicked on the row. Each time I click on the row, the calculation adds another name to the existing name.

Based on your using dbf tables, and you want to do a calculated expression anyway, I would just create a calculated field to create name column.

              Gregg,

Thanks for your input. I finally met my goal. Going through a learning curve as the WEB side is quite different from the desktop side.

Re: Lookup data from a table and display it in a grid build on a different table

I was working with 2 dbf tables, people and reminder. In people, I created a calculated field which put together the parts of the customer name and the company name. The two tables are linked by an ID field. This is a one to many relationship.

The grid I created is displaying the data from a view. Only two fields are editable, the notes field and the checkbox. This is still a work in progress.

                  Thanks again.

                    Sweet.
If its anything like me, you'll have many projects that function, but are still being improved.
I push for the solution used for the benefit of people that may run into this issue into the future.
You'd be surprised how frustrating it is to search, find the exact same issue, and then just read
                    the problem was solved.

                    Have fun with your project.
