Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How do I access linked grid Parent Field > Child Field linking values in child grid?

    I have a grid that I want to access the "Parent Field links to Child Field" values set by the linking definition. I need to get those values for populating a dropdown list in the linked grid. I only need to populate the list once for the whole grid --- all dropdown options are going to be the same. But they need to be filtered and the values I need to use to filter the dropdown are in the linked fields. I see that the values I need appear to be stored in Request.variables.__placeHolderValues:

    placeHolderValues.png

    Is this where I go to get at those values? Or is there a better method?

    Thanks!

    For it to work in Live Preview, you need to use __vp__placeHolderValues, not __placeHolderValues.

      A better parser?

      I'm parsing __vp__placeHolderValues using the word() function --- which took a right long time to find. I was wondering if anyone had a better solution for parsing data in the form:

      some_field=some_value||some_other_field=some_value

      Every additional field=value pair is separated by a ||. I only pass in one value now, instead of 2, to my linked grid. There were... complications. So I used word(__vp__placeHolderValues, 2, "=") to get the value from the pair. This seems pretty easy, though I am wondering if there isn't already a function that you can say, "Hey, function. Give me the value for field THE_FIELD". Like, my_val = foo("my_field")?

        Re: How do I access linked grid Parent Field > Child Field linking values in child gr

        I have used {grid.object}.getValue many times and it work very well, here are examples from the builder.

        Code:
        //Read value in 'LASTNAME' field from the Grid part, row 4. Note that field name must be uppercase.
        var lname = {grid.object}.getValue('G','LASTNAME',4);
        //read value in 'LASTNAME' field from the Grid part, 'current row'.
        //Note that field name must be uppercase.
        var lname = {grid.object}.getValue('G','LASTNAME',{grid.rowNumber});

        Note that {grid.rowNumber} cannot be used in client-side Javascript or Global Javascript functions.
        Instead, you must use the _selectedRow property of the Grid object to get the current row. For example:
        var rn={grid.object}._selectedRow;
        var lname = {grid.object}.getValue('G','LASTNAME',rn);

        //Read value in 'LASTNAME' field in the Search part.
        var lname = {grid.object}._getValue('S','LASTNAME');
        //read value in 'LASTNAME' field in the Detail View part.
        var lname = {grid.object}._getValue('D','LASTNAME');
        //Getting value of 'range' fields in the Search part. You can't use .getValue(). You have to use low level Javascript.
        var val1 = $('{grid.componentname}.S.STARTDATE').value;
        var val2 = $('{grid.componentname}.S._TO.STARTDATE').value;

          I was building a variable dropdown list, which needs to be defined server-side in the OnGridInitialize event. The Javascript "getValue" is not available here. And I don't need it. The linking value defines what can go in my dropdown, so getting it from __vp__placeHolderValues works fine. What I need is an xbasic string parsing function that will return me a value wherein I pass the name "my_field" and the function returns the value "some_val". __vp__placeHolderValues is a "||" delimited list of name-value pairs separated with an '='. EG:

          Code:
          ? Request.variables.__vp__placeHolderValues
          = "fieldA=12||my_field=some_val||some_other_field=pi"

          ? get_value(Request.variables.__vp__placeHolderValues, "my_field", "||")
          = some_val

            Sound like a very simple xbasic procedure, send me example input and output strings to [email protected]. I will try to get it done.
