Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    File Download Feature Pack - Export Filename for file store in SQL

    When I use the File Upload feature pack to upload a file to a SQL database, I'm allowed to store the original file name in a field I've called EmbeddedFileDescr.

    When I download that file using the File Download feature pack it appears I have to enter a Export Filename. All downloads would use that same name. Is it possible the have it get the name from the EmbeddedFileDescr field, it's in the grid, and use that name for the download? That way if the user saves the file they can save with the original filename.

    I've tried entering {EmbeddedFileDescr} and <EmbeddedFileDescr> with no luck.

    If I can't do it with the feature pack can I do it with xbasic. Were would I find that code?

    Solution

    Setup the File Download feature pack so it export as expected expect for the filename that we want to use. I "vMyDownloadFilename" this value in the Export Filename line. Now switch to Text Mode by clicking "Text Mode radio button at the top of the Javacript window.

    Enter the top 2 lines on the Javascript - Attribute tab. The 3rd line will already be there.

    Code:
    vRowNum = {grid.rownumber};
    vMyDownloadFilename = {grid.Object}.getValue('G','EMBEDDEDFILEDESCR',vRowNum);
    {grid.componentName}_G_EMBEDDEDFILEDESCRLABEL1_1({grid.rownumber},'{grid.rowId}',this);

    Change the info on the Declaration - Global tab from this:
    Code:
    var data = '__fileTypeField=EmbeddedFileType&_getData=true&__exportFilename=vMyDownloadFilename&__objectfieldname=EmbeddedFileImage&__csfn=<Default>&__action=Display message&__message=File {filename} not found.';
    To this. The difference is the single quote and plus signs around vMyDownloadFilename:
    Code:
    var data = '__fileTypeField=EmbeddedFileType&_getData=true&__exportFilename=' + vMyDownloadFilename + '&__objectfieldname=EmbeddedFileImage&__csfn=<Default>&__action=Display message&__message=File {filename} not found.';
    See that the vMyDownloadFilename value is now a variable instead of hard coded text.

      I have the image field on the grid. If it's checked to Hide, I get the weirdness. If I set the show/hide expression to 1=2 so that it's hidden, it looks good. In fact, this may have been the problem all along.

        Re: File Download Feature Pack - Export Filename for file store in SQL

        Thank you so much for this Ken... great bit of digging in this thread.

        I'm bringing this thread back in order to use your solution for another question asked by Lars in this forum. Lars wants to configure his Export filename using data from the search part of his grid plus a date.

        So... Lars... the steps are essentially as outlined... but I'll re-trace them here just because Alpha has been updated a tiny bit. We are not going to use the Grid Properties for Export, because you can't configure the filename, so uncheck that stuff. Instead, create an Action button that you'll place on the Grid's Navigation bar. I'll assume you know all that stuff... if not, just shout. In the Action Button dialog, Button Action Javascript, click the ... to get into the "Edit onClick Event" dialog. Here... add the Action Javascript to Export your file... set it all up the way you want it. For the Filename change it from <Default> to something like "MYEXPORTFILENAME" - something big so you can find it easily. Once it's all set up, click OK to get back to the "Edit onClick Event" dialog. Now... click on the Radio Button option at the top labelled Text Mode. You'll get a warning, but do it anyway.

        Now you have Javascript code to run your export.

        Your default code will look like this... (the EXPORTASCII part is just my Action Button name, so don't worry if yours is a bit different - it will represent your Action Button name)

        Code:
        {grid.componentName}_G_ACTIONBUTTON_EXPORTASCII_1(this);
        And we're going to add a bunch of stuff to get your filename in there... so it will end up like this...

        Code:
        myExportSelect = {grid.Object}.getValue('S','DONOT');

        //Do Not Mail|1,3,5,7
        //Do Not Phone|2,3,6,7
        //Do Not Email|4,5,6,7
        //DNM_11-2-2012.txt

        var currDate = new Date();
        var currDay = currDate.getDate();
        var currMth = currDate.getMonth()+1;
        var currYr = currDate.getFullYear();
        var myDate = currMth + '-' + currDay + '-' + currYr

        switch(myExportSelect)
        {
        case '1,3,5,7':
          myExportFilename = 'DNM_' + myDate
          break;
        case '2,3,6,7':
          myExportFilename = 'DNP_' + myDate
          break;
        case '4,5,6,7':
          myExportFilename = 'DNE_' + myDate
          break;
        }

        {grid.componentName}_G_ACTIONBUTTON_EXPORTASCII_1(this);
        Next, you'll see tabs at the bottom of this Event window you're in... click the Declarations - Global tab.

        In here you'll see a line that reads...

        Code:
        var callbackData = '_csfilename=MYEXPORTFILENAME&_exportDataType=Comma%20delimited%20ascii&_recordSelection=Records%20in%20current%20query&_exportSource=1&_maxRecords=10000&_exportHiddenFields=Y&_useColHeadings=Y&_zip=N';
        You'll recognize your nice big static MYEXPORTFILENAME in there and so we need to change this line to get our variable filename working. Change this line to...

        Code:
        var callbackData = '_csfilename=' + myExportFilename + '&_exportDataType=Comma%20delimited%20ascii&_recordSelection=Records%20in%20current%20query&_exportSource=1&_maxRecords=10000&_exportHiddenFields=Y&_useColHeadings=Y&_zip=N';
        That should be it. Thanks again, Ken.
