Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 Application Server Creates a5_temp...... files on Desktop

    Can anybody explain to me what the a5_temp_xxx_xxxx_xxxx.DDD and a5_temp_xxx_xxxx_xxxx.DDM files are that the Alpha Five Application Server creates on the desktop? The "xxx" represents miscellaneous combinations of letters and numbers. How do I prevent these files from being created??

    Thanks

    It happens all the time at my computers when printing pdf reports from webapps. I have application servers active at an XP box and a windows vista box. Its doesn't seem te happen for everybody. So i guess it must be a mistake in my setup of the machines or of my reports or both. Happended to me both version 10, 10.5 and 11. Was never able to cure it. Is one of the reasons that makes me limit the number of pdf-reports i create to a bear minimum, whished i could avoid them all :-(

      Re: A5 Application Server Creates a5_temp...... files on Desktop

      I have noticed the same kind of files being created when *.pdf files are used. Mine are being stored in a Local App\Temp directory.
      Are these files a normal part of the process?
      Apparently they do not get removed in the normal course of the application either.
      I recently had to go back and remove about 26,000 of them to free up disk space on the server which hosts the A5 application server.
      Can anyone shed light on these files and whether or not they are a always generated by the A5 PDF printer?

      I should mention that my reports are based on MySQL tables. However, the temporary files being generated end in *.dbf, *.ddd, *.ddm, *.ddx . Are these actually Alpha Five DBF databases?

        Gordon, those dbf files & their index etc are temporarily being used but apparently not removed from the temp directory. Would be interesting to mention to the Alpha Software development team.

        Ger, open CMD on your XP & Vista box & type SET then see what folders are used for Temporary file storage (the TEMP environment variable) for the account that is active when you run the WAS; that could shed some light on it.

          Gordon, I have managed to delete the temporary files using the technique described in this video:
          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4dLokJzOBU
          The video explains how to delete files on a timer using Windows services. I use a batch file like this:
          @echo off
          del /q "C:\Users\Donna\Desktop\a5_temp*.*"
          exit
          I have it running once per hour.

            Thanks Donna,

            Seems like it would be better if A5 simply removed them once it was finished with them. Maybe the problem is that A5 has no way of knowing when we are finished using them due to the nature of web applications (?).

            It's sort of a solution I would prefer not to have to use, but I do appreciate your response very much, and it may well be the best way to handle this for the time being.

              Hi Frank,

              After SET on XP box i see:

              TEMP=C:\DOCU~1\cpt\local~1\Temp
              and also
              TMP=C:\DOCU~1\cpt\local~1\Temp

              On the vista box i get:

              TEMP=C:\USERS\cpt\AppData\local\Temp
              and also
              TMP=C:\USERS\cpt\AppData\local\Temp

              Does that give you a clue why alpha is putting a5_tmp files on the desktop (and more important: not cleaning up?)

              thanks in advance

              Ger

                Ger,

                If you look into the "View/Settings" menu selection with all workspaces closed in A5 v11 (not sure what there might be for other versions) , there is an entry for "Directories" under the "System" tree in the dialog box for Settings, and one of the choices is to set the "Private Path" to a folder. It appears the default is to use the Windows temporary folder (which is how mine is set, and why I believe the "a5_temp_" files are being stored in my "local App\Temp" directory.

                See if perhaps yours is set to your desktop.

                Gordon

                  Gordon,

                  This setting is in the developer, and nicely set to the windows temp directory. But on the development machine i don't have the problem of a5_temp files on the desktop.
                  Only at the published locations. And as far as i can see the Was doesn't have such a setting (?).

                  By the way, also at my development machine i found lots of a5_temp files at the windows temp directory. So auto cleaning up is also there not happening :-(

                  Thanks,

                  Ger
