Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

2 Weird Problems I Need Help With

    Hi All,

Actually I should say "two weird types of problems" that I need help with. I'm working on a fairly simple database which contains work order requests for our M.E. department. I have a search and a grid on the page. When you click on the request number in the grid, a detail view pops up inside the grid. All the editing is done via the detail view.

The first problem is that I'm getting an HY007 (associated statement not prepared) error from the DB sometimes after changing something and publishing. This error is annoying as hell. It happens when you click the save new record button. The grid will allow you to edit older records and save them without issue but when you try a new one up pops this stupid error. I've messed with primary keys and unique IDs and can't seem to figure out exactly what's causing it. I seem to be able to fix it by opening my grid in alpha 5's grid builder, clicking on the "Query", "edit SQL in Query Builder", and then running a test query. I make no changes. After I save my grid and republish it, it seems to work. There's got to be something I'm doing stupid or a glitch somewhere.

The second problem has to do (possibly) with my dropdown lists and lookups for editing the detail view before saving though I don't think it's exclusive to these types of controls. I have a field called "quantity" and the other day I put something in there and saved it. I was trying to find the source of my first problem so was individually moving some fields on and off my detal view in the grid bulider. When I came back to edit that same record again later it wouldn't let me save it and said "Database reported an error: The database could not find the data you requested." Now, no matter what I do, I can't enter anything into this field on this particular record ever again. The field will work fine on new records but not this one, like it's forever screwed up.

Problem number 2 happed again today when someone went to click on the "vendor" field which was an editcombobox lookup. Initially they got a different error and I found that for some reason the "&" in the vendor name was causing the sql to error out upon trying to save the record. When I tried to work around the problem by changing the lookup to bring back the vendor number instead, the same thing happed: "Database reported an error: The database could not find the data you requested." and this record is forever junk in that one field.

If anyone could let me in on what could be causing my problems here I'd greatly appreciate it.

P.S. I just thought of another one. Why won't a .pdf repor print when my control panel isn't open on the server? Do I always have to leave it open so users can print their reports?

Just had problem number 1 again with a completely new grid and a different table:

    Record was not inserted. Less...
Database API specific error [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Associated statement is not prepared SQL State is: HY007

This table only has very few columns in it. Fullname First Middle Last Unique ID. I wanted to create a grid to enter user names. This time I can't seem to fix the error at all. It won't let me enter anything!

Yes, I should have entered a better title but I couldn't think of anything short enough at the time.

^^Maybe a kind moderator would fix my topic title for me since I can't?
