Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    how can i save the update to a field in a grid row

    i have a grid with a list of customers. when a user selects a customer i need to updat one of the fields 'Last_Contact' with todays date. the grid is updateable.

    there is a button in the row which does two things - first it gets session variable values and redirects to another page, then it set the value in the 'Last_Contact' field, which actually works ok, but the value doesnt save.

    i have this so far

    Code:
    dim session.caseparent as c = e._currentRowDataNew.CASE_PARENT_ID
    dim session.clientfirstname as c = e._currentRowDataNew.CLIENTFIRSTNAME
    dim session.clientsurname as c = e._currentRowDataNew.CLIENTSURNAME

    SetSessionVar = "location.href='adv_caselist.a5w';"
    and

    Code:
    var d=new Date();
     var n=d.toLocaleDateString();

    {grid.object}.setValue('G','LAST_CONTACT',{grid.rowNumber},n);
    {grid.Object}.submitGridPartRow(grid.rownumber);
    how can i get it to commit the updated value?

    I'm not certain but it may be that you need to set the grid to allow individual rows to be saved to use {grid.Object}.submitGridPartRow(grid.rownumber). What happens if you just use {grid.Object}.submitGridPart()?

      i do have this set to all individual rows to be saved.

      What happens if you just use {grid.Object}.submitGridPart()
      Still doesnt work.

      the grid is tabular, updateable, has search part, allows update but not insert or delete. all fields in the grid are labels except the field to be updated which is a text box and has its property 'updateable' as true

      i have an button in each row which runs the events when clicked.

      i dont have to update this field value here or in this manner, is there is another way i can do this?

        Maybe your code is not actually putting a date in that field. Is the field hidden? If so un-hide it and see if a date is actually there,

        Using MySQL I just call a stored procedure to update the last_date field.

        I am not sure of which database you are using but you could write your own update statement in an xbasic callback. You would have to add the code to open and close the table and set the aguments value.

        This is for SQl data.
        Code:
        update t[I]able_name[/I] set last_contact = date() where case_parent_id = [I]argument_value[/I]

          the field isnt hidden and i can see the value being put in to the field, but it just wont save it.

            this sets the value, submits the grid but leaves me with an empty field.

            Code:
            var d=new Date();
            var n=d.toLocaleDateString();

            {grid.object}.setValue('G','LAST_CONTACT',{grid.rowNumber},n);
            {grid.Object}.submitGridPart();
            if i change the code to just submit and set the date manually then that works fine, it seems that these two actions dont want to work together.

            it surely can't be this difficult.

              You are right it should not be this difficult. I have used the submitGridPart method and it works OK for me.

              I am not sure of what this does though
              Code:
              var n=d.toLocaleDateString();
              Is last_contact a date type field? If so why not try using 'd' date variable just for troubleshooting sake.
              Code:
              {grid.object}.setValue('G','LAST_CONTACT',{grid.rowNumber},[COLOR="#FF0000"]d[/COLOR]);

                Re: how can i save the update to a field in a grid row

                i took a differennt approach - i decided to try and set the value on the next page (child record page) once a customer had been selected and achieved it with this

                Code:
                dim tbl as p

                tbl = table.open("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\case_parent.dbf")

                filter_recs = "case_parent_id =" +quote(session.caseparent)

                query.description = "parent_date"
                query.order = ""
                query.filter = filter_recs
                query.options = ""
                qry = tbl.query_create()
                nrecs = qry.records_get()

                if nrecs=0 then
                    Update_Renewals = "alert('Error setting last contact date.');"
                    end
                else

                	tbl.change_begin()
                	tbl.last_contact=date()
                	tbl.change_end()
                qry.close()
                tbl.close()
                end if

                  I think you should have tried something like:

                  var d = new Date();
                  var curr_date = d.getDate();
                  var curr_month = d.getMonth() + 1; //Months are zero based
                  var curr_year = d.getFullYear();
                  var n = curr_date + "-" + curr_month + "-" + curr_year; //depends on you date schema

                      O.k. What about if you did an alert(n); to see what was in there?

                      And you said you got it working when hard coding it (like below)?
                      {grid.object}.setValue('G','LAST_CONTACT',{grid.rowNumber},'2012-11-25'); //Note the date format may differ depending....

                      Just trying to help figure out why it didn't work for you...
