Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    File Upload - Upload a file to a server on internal network

    I have a file upload event but I want to store the file on a different server on my network. It looks like in the file upload event you can put a UNC name to a server (ex. \\servername\files) but it is not working and is actually storing the files in the A5webroot with that UNC. Can I write some code so it will store the uploaded file on a server on my network? I tried to do an ajax callback to a XBasic function to set the path but am having trouble with it. The code I am using is

    function setUploadFolder as c (e as p)
    dim uploadfolder as c
    uploadfolder = "\\<servername>\files")
    end function

    Can I do this with code or actually setting the UNC path in the file upload event?

    Re: File Upload - Upload a file to a server on internal network

    I have the exact same problem - the user uploads the file on one server running A5 WAS and I need to have other users download the same file on another A5 WAS.

    In specifying the file paths in either the file upload or download action scripts, A5 automatically adds on the webroot of the server that the user is accessing.

    Example:

    Server webroot in the Web Project Profile: "\\SERVER01\A5Webroot"

    Target folder in the Web Project Profile: "\MAC"

    Upload folder set to "\\SERVER02\A5Webroot\MAC\Files"

    The action script actually saves the file to a folder named: C:\A5Webroot\MAC\\\SERVER02\A5Webroot\MAC\Files\

    ie it adds the webroot and target folder to the beginning of the folder name

    If I try the same in the download action script, the same happens ie it adds on the webroot and tagret folder.

    I've searched the profiles and settings and cannot locate any parameter that might control this.

    Unfortunately for me, this is quite a critical issue as the functions that provide the upload are within a public internet site (ie exposed to the world!) while the download function is on our internet alongwith other A5 functions that I want to keep separate.

    I've raised a bug this morning buit I wondered whether anyone has had the same problem (like Steven) and found a way around this issue.

    Thanks for any help, it would be much appreciated!

    Regards

    Bob

      Re: File Upload - Upload a file to a server on internal network

      Have either of you tried to map the network drive on your WAS to your directory instead of using the computer name? Then your path would be to a letter drive. I'm curious about this also as I may need to do something similar in the future.

        Re: File Upload - Upload a file to a server on internal network

        I tried many things yesterday - including using SQL to generate a different file name reference by plugging in the full UNC path in a calculated field that would be read by the other server. This worked after a fashion BUT later in the day Selwyn advised that he had fixed the issue in the File Upload feature so that the UNC format works properly to save the file on a different server!

        I did think of adding a mapped network drive (eg F:\) that would bypass the problem, changing the fileupload folder name in a callback prior to invoking the file upload action script, but I needed my Sys Admin to do it and he wasn't available.

        The fix is supposed to be in today's pre-release candidate which I have yet to check. There's no mention in the release notes that I saw this morning so I'll probably wait until Monday to check it out.

        Bob

            I usually use the File Upload - User Defined Function or CUstom Function and write my own code.

            You can use the file.from_blob(e.fileArray[1].data) << for 1 file upload (multiple file uploads require you to loop through e.fileArray).

                Knut,

                The fix that I mentioned worked and I was able to save the file to the proper UNC location (\\ServerName\a5v11webroot\MAC\Files) with the same information stored in a reference field in the SQL table concerned.

                My other function uses the standard download action script, with the Fieldname (referenced_file) in the genie pointing to that same field. It works fine. The users can then click the associated button to open the file.

                Are you still having an issue with this?

                My V11 is the latest (last?) release of V11 (Build 3381 Addins 4096)

                      Re: File Upload - Upload a file to a server on internal network

                      I just checked file download in V12.

                      using unc location is actually working correctly in my test except for one particular use case

                      in my first test the filename to download was specified as

                      \\myshare\data\file1.pdf

                      in the genie, the download folder was blank.

                      this worked.

                      in my second text the filename was

                      file1.pdf

                      and in the genie, the download folder was

                      \\myshare\data

                      this failed.

                      this has now been fixed.

                      however, in the mean time you can fix it yourself by editing the __a5A5filedownload.a5w system page in the web root.

                      you need to search for the block of code like this and replace it with this code.

                      Code:
                      if left(filetodownload,2) <> chr(92) + chr(92) then
                      	if file.filename_parse(fileToDownload,"d") = "" then
                      		if folder <> "" then

                      			if left(folder,2) <> chr(92) + chr(92) then
                      				folder = alltrim(folder)
                      				if atc("Session.",folder) = 1 then
                      					if eval_valid(folder) then
                      						folder = eval(folder)
                      					end if
                      				end if
                      				if eval_valid("session.session_folder") then
                      					'under IIS there is no session folder
                      					if atc("<UserSessionFolder>",folder) > 0  then
                      						folder = stritran(folder,"<UserSessionFolder>",Session.Session_Folder)
                      					end if
                      				end if

                      				if file.filename_parse(folder,"d") = ""
                      					'user specified a relative path for the download folder
                      					folder = Request.ApplicationRoot + folder

                      			fileToDownload = a5_removetrailingbackslash(folder) + chr(92) + fileToDownload
                      		end if
                      	end if
                      end if

                        wouldn't it just be easier to file copy. You're on the same network. If you map the client and the server with the same drive letter, you can update the table with the correct filename and location.

                          Its easier to buy McDonalds instead of cook. Does that mean its the better option?

                          A file save, database write, file copy, database write is way less efficient than just saving the file in the correct location and writing to disk once.
                          Selwyn has provided a solution and using a user defined upload - you can write your own custom logic to circumvent Alphas.
