Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to make a Grid Read-Only based on a Allow Update property?

    Hi All,
    I am enforcing some security permissions to my grids and in some cases customer does not want the user to make changes to the data (just read-only), the grid Allow Update property will kind of handle this by disabling the "Save" button but still the user can make changes to the data even though it cannot be saved.

    The above scenario kind of confuse the end user since they are still able to modify the data and then find out the "Save" button is not there.

    I would like to read the setting of the Allow Update property and used that as an Enabled Expression in the Tab Panes or on each control to disable them.

    Can anybody help me with the code to use to read the value of the Allow Update property?

    Also it would be helpful is this could be implemented at the core level of A5 and if this property is False, then disable all data controls in the grid.

    Thanks!!!

    If you're basing this specifically on security, just below the Allow Update property is security settings for what groups can update. There's also a similar property at the control level that can enable or disable a control depending on the permissions of the user. Is that what you're looking for?

      Hi Christappan,
      I am already using the "Udate Security Groups", the problem is that all the fields are not disabled or read-only, user can still enter data even though the data cannot be saved, but that behavior is confused to the user, the approach should be, if the user cannot Edit/Update the record, then all data should be disabled or read-only.

      Imagine having many forms with many controls and having to go each control to set the Enable Expression, that is a lot of work and hard to maintain. I am looking for an easy way to disable all fields inside the Tab Panel until A5 come up with the right approach to disabled all the fields based on the Allow Update property value.

        Re: How to make a Grid Read-Only based on a Allow Update property?

        Well, I am making some progress. With my limited JavaScript knowleadge I created a function that will return true/false based on the grid's allow_update property, then use that function in the fields Enable expression:

        Code:
        function EnableBasedOnAllowUpdateValue()
        	{
        		if ({Grid.object}.allow_update = true)
        			return true;
        		else
        			return false;
        	}
        Now, situation is that I would have to go change every field Enable expression to get the effect I want, and in all the forms, then keep it in mind when creating new forms, even with the "Paste current property..." functionality. I even try wrapping the fields in a Container or a Frame, but these objects don't have an "Enable express" property to use.

        So is there a more effective way to set all fields Enable expression? something like Set all Fields Enable = EnableBasedOnAllowUpdateValue() somewhere via code?

        Thanks!!!!

          If you are hoping for a level of security here, you should consider using session variables and disable on the server-side.
          Using Javascript to determine edit-ability is easy but can be circumvented using Firebug and resetting the (function) variable EnableBasedOnAllowUpdateValue = true;

            Hi Andy,
            Thanks for the recommendation, but I am new to A5, could you be more explicit on can I accomplish this on the server-side?
            I have tried the following:
            1. Creating a session.SetfieldReadOnly after my login page
            2. Updating this variable in the OnGridInitialized or OnGridExecute with
              Code:
              Session.SetFieldReadOnly = e.tmpl.DetailView.edit.allow_update
            3. Used the following Enable expression in the fields:
              Code:
              Session.SetFieldReadOnly = true;

            And after that it did not work, I got all kind of script errors. I would really appreciate if somebody can tell me what am I doing wrong or a best way to accomplish this task?

            Thanks!!!
