Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Is anyone using report.saveas()" in a web application?

    Tom, I think you are right and that notice was written without considering that someone would be launching a report using report.saveas() or the new a5w_report_saveas(). It is of course true that an Alias is not need to find the DATA for an SQL app. You do appear to either need an Alias or hard-code the path to the ALB file when using those functions.

    But I'd like to point out that for an SQL application, the ALB and associated files are NOT in the "data" folder, commonly using "[PathAlias.ADB_Path]". The ALB is in fact published to the webroot, not anywhere else, unless YOU manually move them somewhere else. Maybe this is incorrect if Active Link tables are used, not sure.

    If you move them to the data folder, then the old [PathAlias.ADB_Path] would make perfect sense. By the way, I always include that Alias in all of my SQL applications because I use it to store stuff out of the webroot.

    If you do allow Publishing to place the ALB and other files where it wants to, in the webroot, then the following scripts will save PDF to the designated folder. I hard coded the path folder below, but you could use an Alias:

    <%A5

    printoptions = ""
    args = ""
    options = ""
    path = "c:\a5webroot\framework_v3\framework_v3.alb"

    filename = "c:\mypdf1.pdf"
    vReport = a5w_report_saveas("users_by_company@"+path,"PDF","","",filename,global_variables(),printOptions,args,options)

    filename = "c:\mypdf2.pdf"
    vreport2 = report.saveas("users_by_company@"+path,"PDF","","",filename)

    %>

      Re: Is anyone using report.saveas()" in a web application?

      So to clarify a bit on the ridiculousness of a new-to-everyone, undocumented function, do I understand correctly that all of the places that I've used "report.saveAs" in my web application (on a5w pages, in functions stored in the aex file, in code within components, etc) should be changed to a5w_report_saveAs()?

        Steve,

        If I have this right....

        Either use PathAlias to point to the ALB in the webroot or hard code a path to the location of the ALB file in the a5w_report.saveAs

        Thanks,
        Tom

          It sorta sounds that way, but I would like to hear from Alpha directly on that one.

              Re: Is anyone using report.saveas()" in a web application?

              I had asked if it was okay to share this information on the message board and never received a reply back. I wasn't trying to start a rebellion, but I know how frustrating it can be to have an application crash intermittently due to a resource sharing issue. __A5RunReport.a5w calls a5w_report_saveAs and as far as I can tell, this script generates all of the report output for web applications. Therefore, I feel very confident in using it without any documentation.

                Irony. It something that we *should* be using, yet there was no known documentation until recently... and that documentation is incomplete. Not all of the parameters are documented in syntax.

                Output_Filename as C = a5w_report_saveas( Layout_Name as C [, Format as C [, Filter_Expression as C [, Order_Expression as C [, Output_Filename as C [, GlobalVariables as P [, PrintOptions as P [, Arguments as SQL::Arguments [, Options as P ]]]]]]]] )

                  Dave, thank you for sharing that info with us--I always share unless Alpha specifically asks me not to.

                  So the next question is, is there something similar for labels and letters (there's not in the wiki)?

                  ...Answering my own question, in the __A5RunReport.a5w there is also an a5w_label_saveAs(), a5w_letter_saveAs(), and an a5w_report_html_saveAs().

                  The former two have the same parameters as a5w_report_saveAs: a5w_label_saveAs(reportName,saveAs,filter,order,filename,global_variables(),printOptions,args,options).

                    From what I have learned outside of this thread, the answer going forward is yes we should shift to the new function. But as you see from my test, both function works properly in the current official release. Although Alpha surely needs get their documentation ahead of the curve, one problem in this and other recent threads is that some individuals are reporting problems here on the pre-release, and that is not helping. Alpha needs the time to document what we need to do to move to the next release, and we need to be able to read release notes that in some cases have not yet been generated.

                      Using this method always made me a bit nervous although I could not find any problems running it, it does say desktop applications only.
                      I am glad there is a protected function now which seems to be working fine.

                        I may not have been clear in my original post that I am still getting an error with both a5w_report_saveAs and report.saveas when I use a Layout-table report and an HTML or RTF output format. I tested a5w_report_saveAs using the current release candidate as per Alpha’s instructions and no longer got the error.

                          And to clarify further, I'm running a pre-release patch too, so my reference to what's used in the __A5RunReport.a5w is based on that. I don't know when these functions were created much less used by the __A5RunReport.a5w.

                            I'm running an older V11 Build, 2765, and am able to use the operations discussed here fine. If that means anything to anyone.
