Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    windows 8

Just upgraded my XP computer to windows 8. When I ran the upgrade assistant, it didn't list Alpha in the compatiable software list. I thought it still might work since it works on windows 7. I reinstalled 10.5. I still had my databases on the computer because I clicked save personal files on the upgrade assistant. Now when I run alpha, it starts up, then when I go to the database it says Alpha is not licensed for this operating system, to contact alphasoftware. Also, I can no longer get on this message board with that machine. It gives an error message. All other alpha websites open ok. I'm on my work windows 7 computer sending this message. Anybody running Alpha 5 version 10 desktop app on a windows 8 computer. If so, what do I need to do?

I am not running windows 8 as of yet. However I think you can right click on the alpha5.exe select properties and then configure the compatibility mode for a different version of windows.

I believe Andrew gave you the solution. However I still have not had an answer to the question of Win 8 compatibility I sent to Alpha Software a number of days ago. Its sad that the answer to such a basic question has to come from the developer community and not Alpha. I guess it cannot compete with reports about nice product reviews...ignore me I am frustrated.

        Re: windows 8

        Define "compatible"..

Definition 1) The application works on the OS.
Version 11 works on the OS thus it is compatible.

Definition 2) Alpha supports the application on the OS.
Alpha Software does not officially support version 11 on the OS thus it is NOT compatible.

If you can get it work on Windows 8 congrats. However your mileage will vary if you have issues and ask Alpha for help resolving the issue. In a production environment I would not recommend running version 11 on a windows 8 computer.

I did what aschone suggested. It reinstalled and would work, but when I closed and reopened alpha five it would no longer run. It gave the same message
"Alpha five not licensed for this operating system". Then would close.

Looks like the versions of alpha five before version 11 will not be allowed to run on windows 8. Mr. Selwyn Rabins says in a reply to an email about the problem the following

            thanks
as the message says, v10 is not licensed for windows 8.
            version 11 is.

Wow! V10 is not licensed for Win 8 but v11 is....pretty much leaves me and the app I have just spend the past several months building feeling like I wasted hundreds of hours. I guess people should pay attention to impact of this choice on existing and legacy apps (pre v11). All I can hope is Alpha will add some clarity, because if I have rebuild my app at this point I seriously doubt it will in A5.

Just as I received the above message, I received a phone call from Glenn at ONBRAND24, a sales rep for Alpha Software. He was calling about a message I left on the Alpha website last night about pricing for a desktop version of V11. They have a desktop only version of V11 for $139, which I just purchased. He said it would be a seamless transistion from V10 and would work with Windows 8. I will let you know. The phone number for ONBRAND24, if you want to puchase a V11 download, is 978-522-3299. As far as I know, this information is not on the AlphaSoftware website. Go figure!

                  Re: windows 8

There is a two-fold problem. The first is not only do I have to buy the v11 Developer but the v11 run-time. I have to say that if this is true and I have no reason at this point to believe it is not, then shame on Alpha for not giving us a warning months ago. I may have had time to change directions. I have hundreds of hours into my project, not including the help of other developers on the board and I am feeling it all to be a big waste. I will be faced with a situation that my product will not run on the new OS. Clearly this benefits Alpha in v11 sales but leaves me in a situation that is unpalatable.

The second problem to figure out how long it will take me to rebuild the product using another tool.

I am really-really bitter right now, so before I say something even more foolish I will be quiet.

                    Re: windows 8

This situation has happened repeatedly with alpha on windows over the years. It is a shame but I am not going to blame alpha alone for this. Microsoft is just as much to blame. If you could install your apps on linux, there most likely would be no problem.

You might try installing your app in a folder off the c:\ drive instead of program files. It has worked in other versions from the past.

                      Re: windows 8

Dave & Paul and the others thanks for the help and encouragement. There are always choices, but I confess this one is a bit of heart breaker for me. I had hoped, though admittedly struggling to release this product next week. Now I don't think I can. It just would have been nice if Alpha would have said months or even weeks ago that version before v11 would not be compatible with Win 8 and there were no plans to make then compatible. I suspect there must be a fee to MS here somewhere.

I realize there are other products and tools, I have licenses for a number of them, I debated a long time before opting in on the Alpha platform, I am feeling a bit foolish in my decision right now. I have no one to blame but my poor judgement. I can salvage the tables, and the design and a few other things. What I can't salvage is lost time. I am not sure at this point I want to spend more money on A5 licenses, if forced obsolescence is part of the licensing model. Keep in mind v10.5 did/does run on Win 7.

Again, this is not a criticism of the platform, just of myself for a poor business decision. I really need to think about what direction to take from here. There an old say about trick me once and trick me twice. I am the twice stage.
                      Regards,

                        John,

Reread my post: Install alpha in a folder on c:\drive and try that. I do not have win 8 to try it on.

I run v7 on windows 7 without problems.

We are running V10 apps on Windows 8, but first you must right click your app shortcut and choose Properties 'Run in Compatibility' and choose Windows 7 but his can be a real pain when distributing applications if you do not know their OS.

Also, as Dave says I always install my applications in a folder outside of Program Files

There is a way to get the operating system of the machine:

                            Code:
                            dim os as p
                            os=a5_os_info()
                            ? os.caption
                            = "Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
You could have this check what that is and add a script that presents a message of instructions on first start up.

                              Mike,

This would not work if you use xbasic within the app since the client has already opened the program and manually changed the shortcut, the only way is to get the installer to detect the OS first and create the shortcut dependent on the OS but easier said than done. I am only talking about distribution .exes here, NOT installing manually on personal PCs.
