Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Where is the information on what to put in the aftervalidate in a dialog. Help?

    Sorry guys,

I've looked through a bunch of videos in which we are told how to create a dialog and how to make it oh so pretty but I can't find out how to submit the actual data to a SQL database! My google-fu must be weak the last few days...*sigh*

The videos touch on the fact that you have to put some code in your aftervalidate event but the only thing I can find that seems close is this:: http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/Saving...+in+Version+11
If that's what I need, why is it buried under "What's New in Version 11 > New Web Components V11 > Ajax Dialog and Data Binding V11 > New Dialog Component V11 > Saving Dialog Contents to a SQL Database V11 " instead of somewhere where I would actually look for it?

Or is there a more simple way to get what I want.

Please help a poor alpha idiot....

      Hi Keith,
I've already viewed that video and it's completely worthless to tell you how to actually submit data. In the end of the video he tells us that he will show us how to write the code to do so in a subsequent video....a video I haven't found to exist as of yet.

What is wrong with using the predefined buttons to submit your data? The code gets written for you.

Well, my predefined buttons don't do anything. I figured there must be code somewhere that I have to write. I've bound all of my data and controls and when I hit the "submit" button it just sits there and looks stupid. The "submit" button never grays out. I have no problem using a detail view to edit and create records but I can't get a dialog to do anything besides sit there and look pretty with my data in it ready to be submitted.

Just a few minutes ago I was looking at the "afterDialogValidate" event in my dialog. I was sitting there wondering what all the crap in there means and trying to read through it when I noticed a little button up at the top of the window that says "Action Scripting". I clicked on that button and Lo and behold, it lets you enter something like this:
            Code:
'To edit this action, place insertion point anywhere in the command, then click the 'Action Scripting' button'.
            ExecuteServerSideAction("Save Data::Save_Submitted_Data_From_ToolsWhereUsedEntry_to_Table_s_")
And guess what? My submit button now works.

First, where the heck does any video or information cover this?
Second, why the heck doesn't it just put this in there when you add a pre-defined submit button to your dialog?

Without getting lucky, I'd have never found this out by myself. If it's not a bug (that it doesn't automatically put this in for you) then this needs to be documented somewhere that's easy to find and clearly. I've been trying to figure this out for days!

And in one day after asking on the forum you got a result. Dont you feel good having found that little nugget for yourself? I'm sure that I saw that Action Script mentioned somewhere as well. I thought it was in that video.

Now you have found that, it opens up a whole new level for you.
