Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Reports of two databases are getting combined

I copied the entire folder containing a database and renamed the database. Now whenever I open in AlphaFive either the original database or the new database, all reports from both databases show under the Reports tab. Why is this happening and how can I stop it? I want both databases to be completely separate without sharing any files.

I renamed the database as described in the link. I have also removed all associations under database properties. The reports are still getting combined. The only way I can stop it is by renaming the original database folder, so AlphaFive can't find it. Then only one and correct set of reports displays when I open the new database. But I need to be able to have both databases active and accessible, so that's only a temporary solution.

If you removed the "old_database_name.alb" from the Libraries tab in Database Properties the extra files should be gone.

I have triple-checked the Libraries tab under Properties, and the only filename there is the new database .alb.
The reports for both databases still display.
I don't know if this makes a difference, but when I first opened the renamed (new) database in AlphaFive, I had not realized to remove the old database name under Properties/Libraries. When I removed the old database name from LIbraries and checked Reports, they were correct, but the next time I opened AlphaFive for the new database, the combined reports were showing again. Yet, now there is no old database under Libraries to remove.

I have a similar problem. I have reports that I do not want on a run-time computer. However I want to use the run-time's databases to run the reports on another computer. Like you it keeps copying those reports over to the run-time computer. Did you ever get this to stop happening?

Re: Reports of two databases are getting combined

Reports in Alpha are not separate entities. The report definitions are stored in the dbf. support files (.ddx, .ddm, .ddd) along with the browse definitions, form definitions, etc. . If you copy those files to another computer, along with the dbf, the reports will be present. If you don't, they won't.

If you access a database on a network where those files are present the layouts will also be available.

Re: Reports of two databases are getting combined

The problem is not that the reports got copied to the new database when the entire database was copied and renamed. The problem is that when either the old or the new database is opened, it displays the reports from BOTH databases, so everything is duplicated. I have tried deleting the duplicates, but they always come back.
To Grummert10: The only solution I ever found (which was really not a solution) was to eliminate the other database and only have the original database. Without another database to pull reports from, there could only be one copy of the reports.
I still wish someone could come up with a solution. One should be able to copy a database as a base and make changes to it, without it being linked in any way to the original database. When you open a database, only the files and support files in THAT database folder should open. (Just like if you copy a Word document and make changes to it - when you open, it won't bring up the text in the original document.)

One should be able to copy a database ................
Agreed, having done so many times. Would have to see a copy of yours to offer any further assistance.

Re: Reports of two databases are getting combined

I'm curious whether the original database was self-contained in a single folder, without using external folders or subfolders?

In my own work here I never rename a database. Instead, I place the entire database in a single folder. When I want to work with a copy of the database I copy the folder and give the new folder a different name. Piece of cake.

If you do this here are a couple of tips for you:

                    a) if you "view" the Alpha control panel in "Details View", the middle column on the tables/sets tab shows you the physical path to the open database. This can help you see "where you are", as you move from folder to folder.

                    b) it's easy to put a header on your database's opening form to show the physical path to the open database. This can help you remember "where you are", as you move from folder to folder.

Re: Reports of two databases are getting combined

                      To Tom Cone Jr:
The original database was in a single windows folder (no subfolders).
I also copied the entire windows folder and renamed it, but did not initially rename the database itself.
When I opened the new copied database, that's when the 2 copies of all reports problem started.
Then I tried renaming the database also and not just the new folder - but still the reports from the original database and the new database showed up. And even more aggravating, I could not tell which duplicate report was in the original database or the new database because they had the same names.
If you copied a database and did not have this duplicate reports problem, I would love to know how you pulled it off. And I wonder if this "automatic linking" problem has been fixed in newer versions.

Re: Reports of two databases are getting combined

Delete the new renamed database files in the new location ( the 4 *.al? files only), then open Alpha and create a new database with that name in the new folder. Add all the files in that directory to this new database and your duplication problem should be solved.

Then recreate all scripts, user defined functions, menus, toolbars, bitmaps, and import definitions that have been defined for the database.

Not so bad if you keep separate libraries to store the scripts, functions, menus, toolbars and bitmaps which can then be copied back in to any database. And wouldn't the saved operations be table related, not database related? I guess paths ought to be checked too...

Perhaps a better option would be to drop all the tables and sets and then add them back?
