Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Frank, that is really pretty! Did you use one of the Alpha styles to get that look? This is exactly what I have been looking for with my Applicant Register page.

      Re: Fun Topic: Show off your work!

      Thank you Michael. I use the GrBlue style. I have added a couple of css sections for the form labels.

      Code:
      .GrBlueFormLabelHeader {
      background: url('images/$box/$size/1x22/$fill/Gradient_Horizontal:%23246%2c247%2c251%3a%23214%2c218%2c237.png.a5image') repeat-x top #d8dcee;
      border: 1px none #aeb5d8;
      border-bottom-style: solid;
      padding: 4px 6px;
      text-align: center;
      font-weight: bold;
      }
      .GrBlueFormLabelHeaderAlignRight {
      background: url('images/$box/$size/1x22/$fill/Gradient_Horizontal:%23246%2c247%2c251%3a%23214%2c218%2c237.png.a5image') repeat-x top #d8dcee;
      border: 1px none #aeb5d8;
      border-bottom-style: solid;
      padding: 4px 6px;
      text-align: right;
      font-weight: bold;
      }

        Here is an example of some of the tools in our Visual Virtual Desktop. - the Virtual Window Panes are all fully functional and aware of each other in our apps. This is about 10% of what runs in our Wall. Calendars are fully supported as are live Document Merged functions. Only ONE of these are grids. The system uses auto email and SMS responders.

        Anything is possible if you keep at it, and think outside the box.

          Pete that is really very cool.

          I am going to 'borrow' Luke's method of changing the selected tab color.

                iRadiate, you put a lot of work into yours and it shows. I love your buttons. Do you need 3 images for each to show normal, mouseover and mousedown?

                  Thanks Michael,

                  I'm not doing anything special with my buttons.

                  The buttons on the TabbedUI pane are simply tree control icons: TabbedUI Buttons.JPG

                  For my Action buttons on the grids, I set an image and hover image name: Action Buttons.JPG
                  That gives me this effect: http://screencast.com/t/rFrreQaTgCj

                    That is so cool. I'm learning a lot from all of you. I'm going to follow your examples and give my stock components a much needed makeover :)

                      Re: Fun Topic: Show off your work!

                      I'm curious to know what tools folks are using for creating and editing images and graphics. I can't afford the Cadillac like PhotoShop and have about a dozen different products I've accumulated over the years that I use to edit graphics with limited results. To site an example of the hoops I jump through, I use a Kodak photo editor that has a nifty tool for creating soft borders and blending colors, but it's other functions like adding text are weak. I use MS Publisher to create buttons but then I have to re-open them with a photo editor program to set the outer white space to be transparent. Needless to say, I jump through several hoops to get an image set just right and then if I need multiples I usually end up with minor differences

                      I'm guessing others are in the same boat so it would be great to learn what others are doing to make this important part of building a web site yield better results

                      ps - the above refers to Windows products.... I always hear how great MAC's are for authoring and editing graphics but that's a world I haven't visited

                        Re: Fun Topic: Show off your work!

                        Dave, if I need icons (which I always do) I just google "web icons 16x16" and go shopping. I just right click what I want and "Save As..." :)
                        I do have PhotoShop CS6 here but more often than not I rely on my ancient but well worn copy of Paint Shop Pro, which I'd be happy to lend you a copy of.
                        But 99% of the time I can find what I want in google, and if any editing needs to be done its mostly cropping and resizing.
                        the A5 style GrBlue will give you nice buttons... throw in a 16x16 icon and have fun.
                        PS... look for "icon sets" there are tons of them out there for free. Also http://www.deviantart.com is a favorite hangout of mine where you can find the most modern and beautiful images all for free.

                                UPDATE: Here is the TabbedUI page I made following the examples given here. Previously I was using a stock Modern style with plain old stock buttons and it looked like something from the dark ages, lol. But a BIG THANKS to you all I now have something to be proud of. The office girls love it and that's what its all about, after all :)
