Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is MySQL best sql software to use? Does it really cost thousands of dollars?

I plan to eventually migrate my back end databases to SQL. I wonder if there is good advice on best program. I went to MySQL web site and can't really figure out what the cost would be. I have mult-tenants that all currently have separate back end MS Access databases. Can I do a similar structure with multiple back end SQL databases? Wonder if that increases the cost? Appreciate any experience and advice.

    Carol, MySQL is free!

(unless you buy the enterprise version which wouldn't make any sense)

Re: Is MySQL best sql software to use? Does it really cost thousands of dollars?

I suspect this will be a mostly Chevy is better than Ford kinds of question and most will like what they have been using.

I have been using PostgreSQL and have been happy and it cost $0. It includes PGAdmin which work pretty well for administration. I use SQL Power Architect for visually designing the PostgreSQL database. Similar to you, I am converting my Access databases to AlphaFive and the Visual Diagram from Access meshes similarly with the Visual Diagram for SQL Power Architect. PostgreSQL is multiplatform with Windows, Mac, and Linux versions at least, as is MySQL I use Postgres on my Mac server from my AlphaFive Windows server. I believe that AlphaFive is only compatible with the 32bit Postgres driver, but I haven't noticed any speed problems. MySQL can use the 64bit driver with AlphaFive. Don't know why, probably licensing, but Apple quit shipping MySQL and instead now goes with PostgreSQL for all Macs.

I think it is safe to say that most AlphaFive developers use MySQL, but that is certainly not verified by me. Just a feeling from talking to others. I think performance between MySQL and PostgreSQL as well as compliance and reliability is mostly a wash now. In the old days, MySQL was faster, but not as reliable or rules compliant where Postgres was a little slower, but more compliant and reliable.

As I was starting with a clean slate, I was a little nervous about Oracle's ownership of MySQL and didn't want to get forced into some expensive upgrade down the road and helping Larry Ellison buy another island. I believe Postgres is more of a true open source supported database and not under the control of any one entity.

I don't believe either one should cost you anything if you are satisfied with the public domain versions. Hopefully that is still true, haven't read the EULA's for awhile. They are both high end, high performance, high reliaibilty SQL databases that can be further upgraded to load sharing and enterprise level performance.

My two cents, but I am the rookie around here.

Peter, I must have been looking in wrong place on the MySQL site. I did download MySQL several months back but it expired on me after 30 days or something... so I thought I had to buy something. Maybe I'd better take a second look around their site.. or do you know how you get the free one?

Andrew, thanks so much for the info on PostgreSQL. I will take a look at it, since you made me aware of it. I've stayed so comfortably ensconsed in the Access world that I know so I am a complete newbie to the sql server stuff.

          Carol,

You want the MySQL "Community Edition":

Alternatively you could use SQL server 2008 express edition
This is usually also free or costs $50
I find this one easier to use and more friendly

Thanks so much for the various links and info, all. I'm trying to comprehend some of it in my ignorance. Sounds like its ok to use the free MySQL for a web app... I think.

Regarding SQL server 2008 (Microsoft), I found myself wondering if Alpha's move towards IIS support (which is a Microsoft thing, right?) would mean that using a Microsoft SQL product would somehow be more compatible?

But then so many Alpha developers seems to be using MySQL and I'd like to be using something that will relate when needing help OR providing help on this forum... don't want to be all different from everyone.... :)

                      Your welcome!.

Alpha Software claims with "Alpha Anywhere" Cloud Ready which may mean that the Windows Azure platform for private and coperate buisness hosting. For you it may mean that this is a good solution because every tenant retains its own database in a private and secure environment. The acces database you just convert to an Azure instance. This also has the advantage that relatively little or no software changes have to do within the database and A5V11 and yet the stability of A5V11 and a SQLServer database available come. Each customer pays what he used and no more than that. This makes you strong competition in the market with a good and clear picture of TCO and ROI, and that is what every customer wants to see today. Good to mention that MySQL also has a good reputation and deserves. If you want to know more please send a pm.

I mainly use Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL. Originally I used PostgreSQL but switched to MySQL because of Alpha Five compatibility issues (and support) at the time.
But I must say PostgreSQL is a serious work horse !

Eric, I appreciate your info about the cloud one. Will probably hold off on thinking about that for now but will keep for future consideration.

Roger and Robert, do you find that the Microsoft SQL Server is working well with Alpha? I'm leaning towards using it because I'm thinking its development environment might feel more familiar to me as a long-time Microsoft Access developer. I watched several tutorials about it today and it looks pretty user friendly. I'm a bit concerned about MySQL being owned by Oracle now, also.

Re: Is MySQL best sql software to use? Does it really cost thousands of dollars?

                              Hi Carol,

Thought I would throw my two cents in!

We use only MS Sql 2008 R2 Express Edition and it has been very solid. The programmability (for functions, views, triggers and stored procedures) is great with a good selection of methods for controlling logic flow. There is also a great selection of third party tools to aid version reconciliation and deployment. Redgate SQL Toolbelt for instance will compare a deployed version with a current db and generate all the change scripts automatically while warning of how data will be effected. This tool alone saves heaps of time.

There are a couple of niggles with MS SQL and Alpha interaction, but I suspect these will be common to other DBs as well. In Oracle you have 'sequences' which, once defined, generate custom alpha numeric unique ids on insert. Alpha seems to be aware of these and I presume deals with them elegantly. In MS Sql you would generate these in an 'instead of insert' trigger. This creates some issues in Alpha which need to be worked around. In the same vain, if an 'insert of insert' trigger determines that the insert should NOT take place, you need to force an sql error message to be returned to Alpha so that it does not simply assume the insert occurred. BTW this is not a bug on Alphas side but is caused by known inaccuracies in the way MSSQL returns info to a calling app about last inserted records. Again I believe this issue may be common to MySQL as well, but perhaps someone else can confirm this.

In terms of multi-tenanting, I read Erics Azure comment with interest and will certainly read up on that. However Oracles next version will apparently be the first RDBMS release with built-in multi-tenanting. This will be an absolutely fantastic advance for SAAS providers. Of course it may be unlikely that the functionality makes it into Oracle Express edition but it may trickle down into MySQL at some point!

                              Regards
                              Chris
