Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

"Performance" tab in configuration settings. How to optimize ?

The Alpha Five Application server has a "Performance" tab within configuration settings.

Is there any existing documentation/guideline that I could read to somehow guide me in maximizing the performance of the App Server ?
My server seems to get unstable after a few days of running okay. My users are now complaining. I am now wondering if the default settings need to be changed.

The Performance tab comes with a suggestion that you don't change it if you don't know what you are doing. So, of course, I've messed with it, but have not found any settings that improve performance markedly.

In your case, Robert, what do you mean by "unstable"?

One thing I would suggest you check is the amount of memory being used by the WAS when the "unstableness" occurs. Look in task manager on your server on the "Processes" tab Various numbers have been reported, but I suggest that if you see a number greater than 300,000 that you restart your server.

If you are using AlwaysUp, you can set it to restart the server automatically either when it reaches some number, or, what I prefer, every night midnightish.

Thanks Pat, you have been most helpful.
I have AlwaysUp running. It restarts the App server 2am everyday. On an average the WAS uses about 200,000 memory.

"Unstable": Sometimes it is as though the server just stop serving up pages and a quick restart of the server (a5v11 app server - via AlwaysUp) solves the problem.
Upon investigation, I have never seen anything unusual that would cause it.

The fact though that so many A5 developers are rating the server as stable makes me think that the problem is at my end.

That same thing has been happening to my company for over a year. We have tried everything to correct it but have not to date. Wondering if you are using SSL?

I think that is the problem but Alpha does not think so. I do not believe Alpha 5 handles SSL properly and causes the server to hang. I never had a problem for 4 years until I started to use SSL.

                What is your release?
In one of the prev. release notes Alpha updated the SSL due to problem.
Send in a bug report BEFORE the FINAL release of V12 not sure that they fixed it AFTER.
Also activate your logging i.a.w. send all info that you have to R&D.

One option is install Abyss x2 as a reverse proxy to Was and use Abyss to ssl trafic to Was.

I have sent them many logs over the last year and they never found anything.

Basic set up is easy. Basically Abyss runs in port 80 (and 443) and Was for example in port 85 (bind to 127.0.0.1). SSL is installed in Abyss. Alpha runs all the time in port 85.
In basic setup the url to Was is for example http://myserver.com/a/.... and SSL https://myserver.com/a/....

Extra bonus is logging and anti-hacking protection in Abyss. Memory consumption of Abyss is 2mb (yes 2 ) when no traffic (if no extra scripting language installed).
