Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Sparse Alphabet Button available in Grid ?

A GRID has an Alphabet Button and displays all letters.

I would like to have letter(s) in an Alphabet Button search disabled or color change if no records exist under that letter.

The help on the DESKTOP Alphabet Button has the sparse option. There isn't a setting in the Grid Alphabet search properties like DESKTOP to set.

    DESKTOP HELP Description.
    Alphabet Button Search
This video shows how easy it is to put an 'AlphabetButton' search bar on a Form layout using the new 'Alphabet Button Search' supercontrol. The control puts buttons for each letter of the alphabet on the form and when you click a button the table is searched for records that start with the letter of the button you pressed. You can choose options that automatically disable or hide buttons for which there are no matching records.

How can I apply this function to a grid ?

    Thanks.
    Harrison

Use the user defined button. You can configure it almost any way you want. There is a video explaining this.

        Hi Charles,

First, what is the user defined alphabet button? Second, please advise which video you are referring to.

        Many thanks.

Thanks for that Charlie, still not sure how that helps answer the original question about Alphabet Button?

Are you suggesting that Harrison creates 26 buttons?

Like Keith i hope not 26 buttons and code behind each to filter.

              Any other suggestions ?

Re: Sparse Alphabet Button available in Grid ?

Well, since Keith is weighing in on this issue, (no pun intended) perhaps he has a better idea of how to accomplish what you are asking for.

The problem is that the code for the Alpha buttons is only run when depressed. It is then that the lookup begins. One thought might be to run a routine using one of the ongrid functions, to loop through all your records, see if there are any records for each letter of the alpha list, then modify the color properties of the button. But, as I say this, it occurs to me that that is a lot of overhead and will slow down the grid display. After all, the routine will need to be run each time there is a change in the records - every add or delete. And then, what happens if some other user is in the system and does an add/delete?

The idea sounds ok, but maybe it is wishlist item. In any event, if it's anything other than what I said above, then it's defintely "above my pay grade".

                  Hi Harrison,

Further to Charlie's suggestion you might like to take a look at Videos 42 and 59. I have not seen anywhere that a letter can be greyed out if there are no matching records. That only seems to work on the desk top. The only other option (video 59) is not to show the button bar if there are only a few records that match the search criteria. Watch and decide what you want to use.

You can inspect the Alpha-button in FireBug and there may be away to address the individual button properties. But if there isn't you may have to code 26 individual buttons.
