Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re-use V9 published files with V11?

I am still reading and practicing with V11 tutorials. In the meantime, before I finish a new V11 application I wanted to re-use a previous V9 application I already had working. I attempted to just point the new V11 WAS to the folder containing the previously published files but when I try to open the site I get this:

    Code:
    500 Internal Server Error

    Script Error
    Error:Script:TEMPLATE line:90
    pGrid.Request.Query_String = fixURL_QueryString(pGrid.Request.Query_String, nam
Cannot write to protected member 'QUERY_STRING'.

I'm not sure what this means but I'm thinking maybe the working project files need to be republished using my new V11 developer? Can I re-use this V9 app with my new V11 setup. I have deleted my V9 program files and now have the V11 program installed.

    Thanks,
    Sean

    Re: Re-use V9 published files with V11?

The code in the Head area of an A5W page (where your error message is coming from) is completely different in V11 than in V9. It is not enough to re-publish your files. You need to go to each A5W page, remove the component, save the page (to remove the code in the Head area), re-insert your component, save the page, publish. Before you do that, you want to open each component, let it conver to Ajax, then resave. Backup your V9 app before you do all of this. There are also a bunch of new requirements for V11 and you need to check the documentation for functions that have been removed, etc.

Thanks Steve. That was very helpful. Fortunately my "app" is very simple and it won't take me long to "convert" it. I'm sure I'll be back for more on V11 as I get more into it.

Well. I tried it but it failed. No biggie. I'm going to build a new app anyway in V11.

          Re: Re-use V9 published files with V11?

I guess the problem is that I used a Grid Linker component. V11 doesn't seem to like that, even though I followed the directions to convert it and remove the Ajax on all the linked components. When I removed the grid linker component the index.a5w page displayed. When I put it back in I get the 500 error again. Time to learn how it's done in v11! I was hoping to put it off for a few weeks and just use the v9 app for awhile.

            Throw out the Grid Linker!

Easy to retrofit. Open the linker (in your old app), review what grids are linked, and how they are linked. Go open the top-most grid, and add one or more Linked Content Areas to recreate the Linker. Then destroy the original Grid Linker.

That worked! I deleted the Grid Linker and created a Linked area in the first grid and linked my other three grids. Added the first grid to the index.a5w page and re-published. It's now working as before.

              Thanks again Steve.
