Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Set radio button to null using JavaScript

    In a radio button, I am using null to indicate that the record has not yet been touched. Issue is sometimes they make a choice accidentally or change their mind, I need to be able to set the value back to null. I created a button to clear the choices, but right now, the code I'm using is

    {grid.Object}.setValue('G','LINE_STATUS',{Grid.RowNumber},[]);

    however, that sets the value to blank, not to null.

    I need null value so I can search using

    No choice|IS NULL

    and get both those that have not been touched and those that have been reset.

    Can anyone help with the correct JavaScript?
    Thanks,

    If you add "No choice|" as the first choice entry (value is blank), and make this the default value, then does your search work as expected?

      Andy, that's a good idea, but the search finds nothing even though there are blank records in there. The null search does find records for records that have the field null, so that's why I was hoping to find a way to set it to null.

        Re: Set radio button to null using JavaScript

        You could try clearing the selection with the following javascript in button or image onclick event:
        Code:
        jQuery('input[name="V\\.R{Grid.RowNumber}\\.LINE_STATUS"]:checked').removeAttr("checked");

          I am using
          N/A|<BlankValue>
          this sets the value to null.

            That doesn't works for me in a grid search. A5 usually inserts a blank entry to my usual list of choices, and I just rename the visible label in onSearchRender:
            //change default blank option text - its a workaround
            jQuery('#{Grid.ComponentName}\\.S\\.ISACTIVE option[value=""]').text('Any');

              Pat:

              If you are using SQL (nearly any flavor) you have to be very careful with NULL. I have made it a point to not use NULL but rather a specific value (blank space, 0, arbitrary date, etc) to represent NULL. SQL cannot index NULL and many searches will not provide consistent results.

              Look at this article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Null_%28SQL%29 for a good discussion.

              I even go as far as to force all fields in the database to not accept NULL.

              Hope this helps.

                Thanks everyone.
                Andy, the first jQuery script to remove the attribute did not work.

                I guess I'm going to have to go with a dummy value.

                  Pat,
                  I honestly don't know exactly what you are trying to achieve.
                  Are you trying to clear a grid search part field or a grid row field?
                  Could you include a screenshot?

                    Re: Set radio button to null using JavaScript

                    Andy, thanks for helping. Here's a screen shot of the grid. There is a series of questions (in this case 123 questions) and the "Line Status" is filled out by a tech reviewing the answers. As you can see, I've switched from trying to use a button to clear the choices to using a choice of "No choice". I think this will work. The goal was to enable the tech to search by choice, including finding questions that have never been set as well as where the choice has been removed.

                      Re: Set radio button to null using JavaScript

                      As an off-the-wall observation, it almost seems as if it would be easier to assign a value for "no choice" instead of null.
                      Default to the "no choice" value, or let the user reset it.
                      Query for the "no choice" value would then be quite simple.

                        Now I see what you are doing, I would also recommend the same as Gregg. I personally avoid NULLs in A5 like the plague. I sometimes also define a default value in the database itself so I know it gets set (to "no choice" in your case) for new records.
                        BTW ... the jQuery statement is a tested, working statement in one of my projects - it probably was not set up for your particular purpose, but this sort of statement could come in handy in future.

                          Thanks Gregg and Andy. In the end, I did as you suggested and created the "no choice" as a choice and set that as the default in the MySQL database. It is working well. Sure helps to have a second (and third) pair of eyes.

                          Andy, thanks for the jQuery statements....I'm a rank beginner with JavaScript, so I probably did something wrong....
