Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Field rules disappeared, new ones do not save

    Hello,

I am new to the board but I began using Alpha products in 1990 for personal recordkeeping.

A problem just came up in A5V7, the final version 4130_3033 . The field rules in the database I use a couple of times each month have disppeared. When I try to re-create them and save them, they do not save. Yet, when I open a couple of other databases, their rules are present. I put the data on a thumb drive and copied it to my old computer that still has A5V7 on it and it wouldn't save the fields, either.

These are not elaborate rules : a validation check for dates in the current month, a simple default value of currency exchange rate in a numerical field, a couple of simple lookups from a list, and a table lookup with several fields filled. Yet, when I save them and try to input data in the form or browse views, the date validation doesn't work, the default value is not present, the lookups are simply not there...

I have edited the field rules in this database every month for years, the last time being Dec 25. Why would the feature no longer work?

Well, I didn't find the cause of the problem, but it is working correctly again.

I simply restored the whole database to last month when it was working and got the
field rules back. Then restored the data table and index files only from the latest
backup in order to get my transaction data back. I am glad for these functions.

The problem may have come about on a day when the power went out and A5V7
    closed abnormally.

Thanks to anyone who saw my post and gave it some thought.

abnormal interrupts have always plagued the computer industry.

Assuming no structure changes since the last backup, you may have succeeded by restoring the structure files (.ddd,.ddm,.ddx)
But you should also look at the other structure files with it.. .set,.sem,.sex (for sets) .adb,.alb,.alm,.alx (for databases)

and others as needed... see all of the file types here...

Thank you for your response and for the link to a complete list of file types, which is helpful.

I have no set designed into this database - just one transactions table with several other
tables in the folder for lookup purposes. I did notice that the restored DDD file with the field
rules is back to a size of 119kb. When the problem occurred it was only 2kb. There have
been no recent changes to structure. The data all seems to be there. So, I think it will be OK.

        Thanks,
