Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Embedded browse inconsistent "Save Enter In Progress" warning....

This anomaly appeared back in v.8 It's still a problem. (All I found was this thread, and no answers.)
    http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...enter+progress

Within an browse (created and viewed from the control panel): The "Save Enter In Progress" is not consistently implemented. Apparently this was never resolved and still creates some issues... I just spent the last hour trying to determine which setting/combination causes this warning to appear/not appear..... Turns out, it's not a setting at all.

Create a simple table with 3 character fields in a dbf. (using defaults) ~ I used A,B & C as record field names.
Don't bother to setup anything else other than the three fields. (no validations, no indexes, no data, no nothing.)
Now create 2 embedded browse objects (using the a5 wizard in the CP)

First one using all three fields in the embedded browse.
Second one using only 2 fields (can be any two, doesn't matter what order).

Open the first embedded browse (containing all 3 fields) and close it without doing anything. (Just open & close it via the CP.) ~ It closes as expected without warning..... Now open the second embedded browse (containing only 2 of the fields) and close it. (Again, just open and close it via the CP.) ~ The warning: "Save Enter In Progress" appears.

The order of fields in the browse makes no difference. You can even select only one field for the browse and the warning appears.
It is only when you select all fields (in any order) that this warning "fails to appear."
It's worth noting that everything is set to "modeless" (system default).

    Why?

It's all about the "framework." (I suppose an "a5-induced" hard drive crash is now in order?)

Do you mean a standalone browse Richard?
Embedded browse s are embedded on a form and cant open and close independently. As I understand.

The example you gave, when does it become a practical problem? I mean with respect to application.

      Hi Ray,

I'm referring to testing/tweaking & working with the browse ("standalone" outside the form) before (or after) it has been imbedded. (Independently opening it up from the browse tab of the control panel & working with it from there.)

Don't know when it does or doesn't. But when this happens by merely loading the browse (that you are creating for use as an embedded browse on a form) it gets me thinking about field rules, validations etc...... If the browse doesn't always behave the same on it's own (at the lowest level), how could this anomaly not have implications when imbedded?

It's frustrating to be working with basic functionality and are thrown off balance by inconsistent results like this..... Not a confidence builder, that's for sure. And although a5 v.11 presently seems to be (much) more stable (in terms of the development GUI) than in the past, the presentation (desktop coding) layer is still rough at times too. (One example is the "unexpected font size reset" after editing events in field rules. If you use the "Open Code Editor" button to edit the code, once you exit the code and return: The text resizes to "huge" in the mini-editing region of the Field rules events tab. ~ That's just one example.)
I'm surprised they (Alpha) hasn't taken the time to fix some of the little things like this. And I'm sure it's very easy to justify this "lack of attention" as being the result of development of other layers & in particular the web/mobile platform. But without the "base layer" (desktop) being rock solid, everything else is at risk. (Over the years, Selwyn has been very helpful & responsive with regards to major bugs and issues. It's the refinements that never receive adequate attention IMHO.) ESPECIALLY since they are now (presumably successfully) selling annual $2k subscriptions!

~Remember how "Windows" became so bad/quirky that until much of the underlying code-base was re-written and cleaned up for Windows-7? Users were "flocking elsewhere." (And for several years it became the primary marketing theme for Apple's OSX.) ~ At that time, I was convinced that Windows was loosing its' footing as the #1 desktop choice for consumers. I'm not saying it's the same thing here with a5, but in the end it does present consequences.
