Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Pie chart questions

    Happy New Year!

I have been trying to learn how to create charts and I am running into issues that I cannot resolve, so I'm hoping someone can explain how to use some of the options.

I've looked in the help file, but there is only one page for charts and I don't understand the descriptions for the fields on the Graph Data dialog box. I also searched this forum and did not see any prior questions for the problems that I can't resolve.

On a pie chart, is there a way to display the amount/value that each slice represents? I figured out how to display a text field in the legend, but not how to display a numeric value of each slice.

I do not understand how to use the "explode" option. I want to explode the slice with the largest or smallest amount.

    Thank you
    Tracy

    Hi Tracy,

I'll need a little bit of time, but I will isolate the charting part of one of my applications and post it here for you to refer to. It's quite simple but I think V useful.
Hopefully, I'll have something for you by tomorrow.

      Hi Paul,

Yes, exactly what your charts show of being able to display the dollar amount next to the category name (or whatever the correct term is) is one of the things that I can't figure out.

Thank you. I'll check back tomorrow.

Actually, whilst putting this example together, I realised that I don't know how to sort the appearance of the displayed charting data, i.e. it would be nice to sort it in ascending or descending order. I don't think this has anything to do with the order of the form's data table as it is not necessary for the table to be displayed to produce the chart - I could be wrong though - any ideas?

            Re: Pie chart questions

Thinking about it, I probably need to create a sorted summary table for each graph first and create a set with the summary table as the top level.
Will give it a try when I have time.

              Paul,

I was able to get the 2 values to display on the axis using the Data Label field, based on the charts that you provided.

              Thank you so much.

                Hi Paul,
The only way that I could get the values in ascending or descending was to create an order/sort expression. I haven't tried creating a summary table.

I haven't tried this either, but if you click the button at the end of the field on the Data Label Expression dialog box, you get the expression builder. Could you create a sort expression there, instead of having to create another table and then attaching/moving the reports to the new table or set. Just a thought.
