Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Excel Import - Overwrite instead of append

    Hi All,

    I have 2 action buttons on my grid...."Export to Excel" and "Import from Excel". This is useful as it is easier to do mass updates for the user. Unfortunately, the file appends to the database upon upload. Is there an option to overwrite the DB instead of appending? If so, where do I find it? If that option does not exist, how can I solve this appending instead of overwriting problem? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

      Chris,

      You could execute a function that empties the file before importing. One of the videos on V10 feature pack v10FP12 has a sample function to delete. You can do it on Server Side or add an action button to do it.

      a_tbl = table.open("upif")
      a_tbl.delete_range(.T.)
      a_tbl.close()

      I use a ajax callback action button to clear selected records with Xbasic Function under Code.

      Function Clearpoll as c (e as p)
      dim t as p
      dim mco as c
      mco = e.rc.session.__protected__Ulink
      t = table.open("transaction")
      t.fetch_first()
      while .not. t.fetch_eof()
      'If t.co = mco
      t.change_begin()
      t.delete()
      t.change_end()
      'End if
      t.fetch_next()
      end while
      t.close()
      end function

      I have the If and End If commented out because I can not get the session variable to work.

        Look at table.zap if you are emptying a dbf table - truncate if an SQL table.

        The process of deleting all records takes a longer time while zap/truncate is fast regardless of the number of records in the table.

        Also deleted records remain in the table until a pack is executed. Zap/truncate moves the end of table marker so all records are removed in a simple process.

          Yes, zap is way I go if I want to delete all records. But if you are importing into a table with multiple company data and you only want to delete one specific company, then reading through whole file and deleted only records is the only way I know. If you have a better way to do it, I would welcome it, as I can not get session variable from logon to work.

            I was answering Chris's question. Your post looked like an answer to Chris's question and didn't state the multi company issue - let alone be a question.

              Al,

              1. I was agreeing with you. 2. Just commenting as to why I suggested reading through a file. 3. Was hoping you would see why my check for a selected company did not work.
              Don't understand the reason for you to be nasty.

                So you are mixing another thread where you still have a question into this thread where a similar but different answer is needed..

                This causes confusion for the original poster in this thread and is not good form.

                The forum works better keeping questions and answers focused on the problem at hand.

                  I can see why that can create a problem. I will keep that in mind for the future. Thanks.
