Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Inserting records into an existing table from a different table.

I have a table I need to populate with data from another table.
Table one has a format (example but the real table has 100+ fields) of
    ID
    Classification
    Description.
    Result
    Date
    Outcome
The ID's are pre populated as they are the result of a specific query.

    Table two has
ID ( possibly matches the ID in table one)
    Definition
    Freetext

    I need to get
Definition into Classification and Freetext into Description. The fields are the same size and attributes.

Using SQL I can do an Insert based on columns where the ID's match.

How could I do this quickly and easily in Alpha?
I have tried Joins, Intersects and Crosstab but they all mean that I have to do additional work resolving the column names afterward.

Like most things, I'm sure I've done it before but I cannot remenber how.

As always, any help will be appreciated.

    Append is easiest.
    There can be only one.

      Ted,

check the option to append unique, replace existing. May be just the ticket.

Or copy the original table, change the names of the new table fields from Definition to Classification and Freetext to Description and append directly from that.

Pretty much the ways I've tried, and thanks all.
The problem with multiple appends - even the replace existing add unique means that I cannot easily populate a new field as the add unique wrecks the existing data. What does work is to create a Join and then use Field rules to copy from one field to another then delete the joined fields which are no longer needed.
At least the responses confirm that I'm not going potty!

And when there's a new one to add?

Ted is there a reason this one time operation needs to be done within A5?

Re: Inserting records into an existing table from a different table.

The situation requires data from 6 different tables to be consolidated into one.
Joining the tables ensures that the data is accurate and the field rules ensure that any data conversion is also handled John.
The one off load will be handled using SQL.

Just thinking out loud. It does seem you could write the SQL script to include and do the data type conversions as well. Not knowing the table definitions or the new table layout its hard to help. What I do know is SQL is far more powerful than I give it credit for at times so I often fail to use it as I should. Maybe that just me.

Just curious, what the database type you are moving data between, Access, SQLServer, MySQL, dbf, etc.
                    Regards,

                    John W.
