Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help with Java script new Date() as default date in dialog

    So I have a dialog with a repeating section and I need to have a the date/time recorded when the record is entered. As noted in other threads the Default =Now() does not do it. So I went to Java Script to fill the date from an OnChange event. I have the code to get the right repeating row but I can't figure out the new Date().

    When I use var dt = new Date() I get : Sun Jan 20 18:36:39 EST 2013, However this is not accepted in as time field. I tried looking at all the options for formatting the date object but just can't get it to work. Dose anyone have a javascript format for date time that will work in a time field?

    Thanks
    Tom

    The way I do it is use a timestamp field in mysql. If this cannot work for you then you might have to break the date down into the day, month, year, hours, minutes, seconds, etc and reassemble it in a format that your database needs. Here is a link to all of the javascript date functions. http://www.w3schools.com/jsref/jsref_obj_date.asp

    Hopefully you will get what you need there.

    Here is some code I had once used to calculate the the hours between 2 date / times. You might find this useful.
    Code:
    //var vCalculateForHours = 1000*60*60;
    //var vStartTime = this.value;
    //var vStartTime = new Date(vStartTime);
    //var vEndTime = {grid.Object}.getValue('G','ENDTIME',{Grid.RowNumber});
    //if (vEndTime == '')
    //{
    //		var vEndTime = new Date(lvStartTime.getTime() + (1 * vCalculateForHours));
    //var vMonth = vEndTime.getMonth()+1;
    //var vDate = vEndTime.getDate();
    //var vYear = vEndTime.getYear();
    //var vHour = vEndTime.getHours();
    //var vMinute = lEndTime.getMinutes();
    //var vDD = 'am';
    //if (vHour >= 12)
    //{
    //vHour = vHour -12;
    //vDD = 'pm';
    //}

    //vMonth = vMonth < 10 ?'0'+ vMonth : vMonth;
    //vDate = vDate < 10 ?'0'+ vDate : vDate;
    //vHour = vHour < 10 ?'0'+ vHour : vHour;
    //vMinute = vMinute < 10 ?'0'+ vMinute : vMinute;

    //		var lvEndTime =  vMonth + '/' +
    //		vDate + '/' +
    //		vYear + ' ' +
    //		vHour + ':' +
    //		vMinute + ' ' +
    //		vDD ;
    //		{grid.Object}.setValue('G','ENDTIME',{Grid.RowNumber},vEndTime);
    //}

    //var vEndTime = new Date(lvEndTime);
    //var vQTY = (vEndTime.getTime()-vStartTime.getTime()) / (vCalculateForHours);
    //{grid.Object}.setValue('G','QTY',{Grid.RowNumber},lvQTY);

      Call me lazy if you want, but I think this task is easily accomplished using xbasic
      in the afterDialogValidate event.

        The issue with xbasic was the repeating sections. If not for that I would just coded it after the save event. I'll look at that again.
        Thanks,

          This is where I ended up and after going through all that stuff I just thought there had to be an easier way. I will look at timestamp again.

          Thanks,

            Hi Tom,

            If I'm reading right, you need/want to timestamp everything once the user hits submit.
            I have given up on the default value, and started putting the code in the afterDialogValidate event.

            It seems strange at first, but it really starts making sense.

              Hi Gregg,

              That is where I ended up. I did try this first but I didn't realize I had to mark the field and as Not NuLL. Once I did that it works as expected.

              thanks,
              Tom

                In an effort to help those that will stumble on this thread, care to share some of your code (hide sensitive info of course).

                  Hi Gregg

                  No great code here. I just changed my ActionDate field to TimeStamp in MySql and made it Not Null. That forces the field to be filled with a date time stamp.
