Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    string manipulation

    If I wanted to extract two numeric variables out of the following string '11m 10.79s' (i.e. 11 and 10.79) what would be the most effective way to do it?

    Thanks

    Re: string manipulation

    What patterns are present in the strings? i.e. is the "m" always 2 digits? is the "s" always 5?

      Re: string manipulation

      No Tom, not exactly as you said, the minute numbers will be either 1 or 2 characters in length and the seconds numbers could br 5 characters long or 4 characters long, for exam0ple, the string could be '7m 8.01s' ...

        Re: string manipulation

        There does always appear to be a decimal point in the second number and therefore the decimal places is always 2

          More details please. Give us sample data to work with. Will the "m" value ever include decimals? Will the "s" value always include decimals? Please be comprehensive and detailed.

            m values will not have decimals only s values

              Paul, these expressions will extract the numerics as strings of characters. If you need them stored as numerics you'll need to use the val() function on each.

              Code:
              my_str = "11m 10.79s"
              s = regex_split(my_str,"(\d+.\d+)")
              ?s
              = "10.79"

              m = word(regex_split(my_str,"(\d+)"),1)
              ?m
              = "11"
              There may be simpler ways of doing this, so I'll be lurking in the background.

                  Re: string manipulation

                  Works a treat

                  dim winmin as n
                  dim winsecs as n
                  wintime = "11m 10.79s"
                  winmins = val(word(regex_split(wintime,"(\d+)"),1))
                  winsecs = val(regex_split(wintime,"(\d+.\d+)"))"

                  So, wintime will be the imported string time field
                  winmins will be an additional numeric fiield with a val() field rule as above
                  as will winsecs

                  Thanks again Tom...

                    Re: string manipulation

                    Really cool, Tom!

                    Just another idea - but it only applies to a number at the beginning of a string:

                    my_str = "11m 10.79s"
                    First_number = val( my_str )
                    ?First_number
                    = 11

                    and, just so you know it works with decimals ....

                    my_str = "11.325m 10.79s"
                    First_number = val( my_str )
                    ?First_number
                    = 11.325

                      Re: string manipulation

                      Nice suggestions, I am doing the same thing, but I am having problems to do some calculations on a certain formula.Here is the fist scenario:
                      Price= 2500, Discount=10+1 (to be supplied by user), the discounted price is (2500*10)/11= 2,272.7272
                      Here is another scenario:
                      Price=2500, Discount = -5% (again to be supplied by the user), the discounted price is 2500-(2500*.05) = 2375.
                      Another case is Price=2,500, Discount =+7%, 2500+(2500*.07) =2,675

                      My problem is how to evaluate the formula based on the supplied discount by the user(user can enter 12+1,-7%,-10% or 10+2,+8% etc, How will I determine on my app so that I can implement either the first or second formula or 3rd on the 3 scenarios?Thanks!

                        Jet, while there may be some similarities I think your question belongs in its own thread. It's considered rude to hijack someone else's thread by moving the discussion into a different area. Worse, when a single message thread tackles multiple questions the thread is much less useful as future knowledgebase. Someone interested in your question would have to wade through all the preceding posts just to get to yours.

                          I picked the wrong choice, at first I thought I can just start a new thread and asked a new question, but I thought it was a bit related to the question here. But for Tom Cone Jr. it was rude, it is a HIJACKED FOR ME ON SOMEONE ELSE'S Thread, now I know that this is how it is meant by others to post on someone's thread.Thanks for the reminder.I will then post my question in another thread and I hope I will not be charged in court for doing something rude on this thread, just in case someone will sue me, may I get you as my Lawyer, hope you will not charge me much for your services.

                            Jet, I don't think Tom meant to come across as high handed, I don't think it's in his nature. However, I do think he makes a valid point that a separate thread would focus on your particular problem, especially as it does seem very different to my original question in this thread.
                            Out of interest, how do you envisage the user entering or indicating the discount value?
