Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Table Definition Field Names Truncating after file.copy and file.rename???

    I have a requirement to create daily distribution files and then FTP them up to a web server for distribution by ftp download to other Alpha systems.

    I have written the scripts in both systems to accomplish this (eight dbf tables involved) and all works fine, except the field names in the resulting copied/renamed tables are truncated to a maximum of 10 characters.
    Please see screenshot of table after rename and the original. I also attach a doctored sample script that shows the code for the first of the eight tables processed.

    Is this a bug in Alpha or am I not including something in either the copy or rename functions?

    Thanks

    The DBF file structure allows for only 10 characters in the fieldname. A5 allows us to use longer names by storing them in the associated dictionaryfiles. ie ddd and ddm.
    So you need to copy these over as well.

    A complex system that does not work is invariably found to have evolved from a simpler system that worked just fine.

        Curious. How did you learn of the file.copy() and file.rename() methods?
        There can be only one.

          From the A5v5Help dowloaded from the AIMS website (I think) - just checked, yep:
          http://www.aimsdc.net/Tips_Funcs/A5v5_Help.htm

          Here is the entry for File.copy()

          "File.copy()

          Syntax:

          File.copy( Source_Filename, Destination_Filename )

          Description:

          Copies Source_Filename to the Destination_Filename. If you copy files between specific drives and directories, include the full drive and path with each filename.
          You can use this method to duplicate any type of file, including tables, sets, and applications. However, to copy a table, set, or application you must remember to copy all related support files. For a table this can be up to six files: the table itself (.DBF), the memo file (.FPT), the index file (.CDX), and, if present, the three files that make up the data dictionary (.DDD, .DDM, .DDX). When copying tables it is easier to use the <tbl>.duplicate() method instead, since duplicating a table automatically duplicates all support files and data dictionaries.
          NOTE: This function will not create new folders. If the destination path does not exist, an error will result.

          Examples:

          'This statement copies a file into the data directory
          '----------------------------------------------------
          File.copy("c:\a5\defaults.txt","c:\a5\data\defaults.txt")
          'The following script copies the CUSTOMER table
          'and its support files (index and memo file, but not
          'dictionary files) from one directory to another.
          '-----------------------------------------------------------------
          filename1="C:\A5\A_SPORTS\CUSTOMER.DBF" 'the table file
          filename2="C:\A5\A_SPORTS\CUSTOMER.CDX" 'the index file
          filename3="C:\A5\A_SPORTS\CUSTOMER.FPT" 'the memo field file
          newfilename1="C:\A5\DATA\CLIENTS.DBF"
          newfilename2="C:\A5\DATA\CLIENTS.CDX"
          newfilename3="C:\A5\DATA\CLIENTS.FPT"
          File.copy(filename1,newfilename1)
          File.copy(filename2,newfilename2)

          File.copy(filename3,newfilename3)

          See Also:

          File.rename(), File_copy(), <File>.Copy()"

          Here is the entry forFile.rename()

          "File.Rename()

          Syntax:

          File.rename( Old Filename, New Filename )

          Description:

          Changes the name of a file. You must supply both the original filename (Old Filename) and the New Filename.

          Examples:

          'This script will rename any file.
          '---------------------------------
          filename = ui_get_file( "Rename Which File?", "All Files (*.*)","","X")
          IF filename = "" THEN
          END
          END IF
          newfile = ui_get_file( "New Filename", "All Files (*.*)","","N")
          IF newfile = "" THEN
          END
          END IF
          file.rename(filename,newfile)

          <file>.copy(), File.remove()"

              This was the portion that is most pertinent to your issue.

              Just wondered what was unclear.
