Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Citrix and Alpha Five: is it a good combination?

Never needed to work with a Citrix server but now I do. 8 to 10 outsiders who connect via Citrix. Alpha Five app will be used by them.

First, if you have experience with Citrix, is it pretty straightforward or are there major caveats?

Second, my main concern is trying to set up a private workspace for each user. This is not a problem when each user has a workstation on the network since every user has a C drive unique to them. I typically set up a directory on each of the local drives called c:\root (not to be confused with the root of C -- I name it "root" because I used to use the root of C as the personal work space back in the Alpha Four days, but now I avoid the true root directory and instead just call the place where temporary work files is located as c:\root). My use of the private workspace in c:\root is, among other things, to pass parameters between Alpha and other programs. As long as everyone has the common c:\root, I don't need to worry about anyone's passing parameters clashing with anyone else's.

But, can this be achieved on a Citrix server? It is my impression that everyone on the Citrix server shares the same "C drive", meaning that everything will be shared by everyone. Do you know if this is true? If so, do you know of a way for me to achieve the private workspace for each Citrix user?

    Thank you.

Thanks for this general Citrix link, but it doesn't answer either of my 2 questions: 1) can a private workspace be carved out for each user and 2) Alpha Five in the Citrix environment.

Jeff, is this a desktop app ? ... or web app server ?

When you say "workspace", are you using the term as a synonym for "database"? ... or something else....

          Hi Tom,

First, this is a desktop app.

Second, by workspace I mean that every user on the Citrix server has a "c drive" where there is a directory with a specific name (call it "root", so it would be visible as c:\root for each user's session) and it would be separate and unique for each user. It is a directory where temporary values are stored for certain procedures. That is, it is not shared by all users.

The environment looks like this: f:\data is the common Alpha Five data and support files location, c:\program files\a5v10 would be the location for the Alpha Five installation (runtime) (though I don't know if each user has their own installation or shares in a common installation with Citrix), and c:\root is the directory unique to each Citrix user.

          Thank you.

Two things in your original post confused.

            1) in vers 11 the term "database" has now been replaced with "workspace"; and

            2) you've posted to a forum reserved for web app server questions.

Sorry, I thought I was in the version 10 desktop forum. Not sure how I got diverted to web app. I didn't know about the definition of "workspace". Mine goes back to ancient history.

Do you happen to know the answer to the private area (c:\root) for each session of Citrix?
