Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Cant Get Expression Builder to Run

I have the developer version (build 1980-3163) (which I have not used in 3 years) - decided to re-hash something I did a while ago only to find that when I try to invoke the expression builder nothing happens, except the screen freezes and the only way to get out of this situation is to press the Escape button.

I am running under Windows XP

Any one any ideas about this please?

Is it possible that you used to use a much higher screen resolution? If so try to increase your resolution as high as you can you may have just moved the expression builder off of the viewable screen. Once you find it drag it over and reduce your resolution.

It could be that the expression builder is coming up of the screen. Have you used two monitors lately or in the past?

It's usually a registry mishap that causes this.

The registry keeps that last location of the dialog and puts it there the next time. If the location is corrupted it'll end up off the screen..

So I keep the license number handy, delete all of the registry entries for that version of Alpha and re-enter the license when I start Alpha again.

If I was really smart I'd find the registry entry that it pertains to and remember it..

All your replies are probably right somehow. Yes - I have 2 monitors, but I have always had 2 monitors. The program certainly behaves as thought it is opening a window off screen. The idea of changing the resolution did not produce the disappearing window so I guess I need to try and delete the registry keys for my version of Alpha. The question is how do I go about doing this ? - Thanks everyone for your help it is VERY much appreciated

I don't always remember the details but I do remember how to find them.

                  Using regedit just find

                  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alpha Software\Alpha Five 8.0

                  then scroll down.

Pretty much the same for most versions.

For anyone nervous about deleting registry keys, you can also edit the values for x# and y# under that key. Regedit will accept simple decimal entry. The two numbers are pixel offsets to the right (x) and down (y) from the upper left corner of the screen.
