Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Mark - I have recently started the rebuilding/repurposing of my web site. I would like to suggest that you take a good look at WordPress when you decide to update. Ever since version 3.0 came out, it is now way more than just a "blog"

I actually use a program called site spinner. Totally what you see is what you get. As a point of note I also found that it allowed me to use Alpha web code. Trouble is I have not evolved in that area either yet. I made a video about how that was done. Click here

There is some valuable information on this thread!

One parallel question ... just as important ... how are you driving traffic to your site?

Being on the web is one thing, but how are you creating visits?

Re: Software to market you business and Alpha

Ah! the chicken and egg question. My thoughts on this are I am not so sure you can actually market a website with any great success, particularly to attract the random interest searches and in particular new business. Unless you pay a premium to the search engine system. The real thing to understand in marketing is that stats will tell a good from your efforts to market is 3%. Hence the need to saturate.

I have seen people try social media, but most people on that are there to chatter. My thoughts are a website is compliment to your selling techniques. A website is a brochure and like a brochure you have give it out, not expect people to come to it. If you put out brochures or ads, people see the web address and go there for more info. I am actually amazed how many ads do not have a web address yet they have website.

I am also amazed how many people in small business don't have a email on the business card that has their business name in it and use things like gmail. If you have a website then your emai must be that website address as well. It is simple to do.

I am really looking the medium of YouTube as something to help me. I find that programs like we talk about here plus another beauty called camtasia allows me put up videos on the web on YouTube to demonstrate to people with not effort. If they need to involve other they pass the link on. Do this on your own website can become very time consuming

Great thread and excellent Sparkol video you made Mark, very thought provoking.
We prefer http://screencast.com/ to camtasia for videos (although I think they are the same company) also Jing is good.

Sliderocket is another excellent resource if you prefer working in the powerpoint environment.

                Thanks for sharing,

                Paul

Re: Software to market you business and Alpha

Sliderocket looks very interesting ... I'll have to sign up for the trial

Speaking of PowePoint, one that I use all the is iSpring Converter. A great way to put you PPT on the web. Not only that, but it is SCORM compliant, which means that one can export it as SCORM which can then be imported into any SCORM compliant Learning Management System and it will interact with it. For example, if one has a lesson set up whereby the student must view all the content and they try to advance without seeing all the slides, the system will not let them until they do so :)

However, Screencast is only a place to share videos and is not an authoring environment as Camtasia and Jing (free version of Snagit) are. And yep, they are all by TechSmith What I have done now since getting hooked on VideoScribe is using Camtasia to string together a few of these and add some other features and elements.
                  Cheers!

Yeah, I haven't used screencast for a while, my son does that stuff now, though I am sure that there used to be a recording option on the website, maybe I am getting confused with Jing, Anyhoo...

Re: Software to market you business and Alpha

One idea to leverage some of the suggestions here would be to place an ad on Craig’s List. There is a category for Services with a sub category for Computers that does not cost anything to place an ad in. At this point for me Alpha is just a hobby and I am not ready to provide any services. However just for fun, and the sake of this discussion, an ad placed there can be found at the following link:

                      http://inlandempire.craigslist.org/cps/3620451420.html

There are a zillion ads placed in the Computer Services section of Craig’s list each day. Doing a search of this section with keywords a potential customer might use can bring this down to a surprisingly small number of ads.

Seeing someone do something horribly wrong can actually be more educational than seeing something done in a manner you agree with as it makes you think. With the level of experience I have no offence would be taken towards any negative remarks about the linked Craig’s List ad, provided they are accompanied with constructive comments.

When I do a search for services at my job, some version of internet Yellow Pages almost always comes up. Placing an ad with one of these services might be a cheaper way of getting your services linked to web searches. Doing a search on the web in the area you live with the product you want to market might give you an idea where your best bet of internet marketing dollars might lie.

                      All the Best,
                      Rich Pasma

screenr looks interesting too ... sort of a web-based, subscription version of Camtasia.
