Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Can't open non Alpha file

    So if you use

    sys_open(filefind.get_recurse("W:\MFG_ENG\MANDREL",ALLTRIM(Tool_No)+CHR(92)+ALLTRIM(Dwg_No)+".DWG"))

    what happens?

    Don't worry about the expression builder, just try it.
    There can be only one.

        No. You left out the sys_open( )

        And, you're in the expression builder instead of the interactive window.

            I put a TXT file in a folder called TEST. I put the TEST folder in a folder called "DOWNLOADS".

            Using vers 9 of Alpha Five I get this:

            Code:
            ?filefind.get_recurse("D:\downloads\test","nextpayment.txt")
            = "D:\downloads\test\NextPayment.txt"

            and I get this, starting at the downloads folder:

            Code:
            ?filefind.get_recurse("D:\downloads","nextpayment.txt")
            = "D:\downloads\test\NextPayment.txt"

            I don't have vers 8 installed any longer.

              Re: Can't open non Alpha file

              Again the error message is "File does not exist".

              Open interactive and copy and run this code

              Code:
              vFileNameC = "W:\MFG_ENG\MANDREL\04055-80\ASSEM.DWG"
              ?file.exists(vFileNameC)
              Let us know what is returned.

              Second part
              Code:
              filefind.get_recurse("W:\MFG_ENG\MANDREL",ALLTRIM(Tool_No)+CHR(92)+ALLTRIM(Dwg_No)+".DWG")
              Your second argument is as follows. I have not tested this but I am almost sure you cannot use CHR(92) in this argument because a "\" character is not a valid character for a filename.
              Code:
              ALLTRIM(Tool_No)+CHR(92)+ALLTRIM(Dwg_No)+".DWG"
              However my wager is on the fact that the file you are trying to find does not exist.

                  If the file you are trying to open in your original post is "not the files i am trying to open". Then why are we messing with this?

                  Try this interactive
                  Code:
                  vStartingPathC = "W:\MFG_ENG\MANDREL\04055-80"+chr(92)

                  vFilePatternC = "ASSEM.DWG"

                  ?FileFind.get_recurse(vStartingPathC, vFilePatternC)
                  Let us know what you get.

                    Re: Can't open non Alpha file

                    Andrew,
                    I entered what you suggested with a little variation. I actually looked for the file in the sub-folder. Here is what I got:

                    vStartingPathC = "W:\MFG_ENG\MANDREL\04057-80"+chr(92)
                    vFilePatternC = "8ebc69.DWG"
                    ?FileFind.get_recurse(vStartingPathC, vFilePatternC)
                    = W:\MFG_ENG\MANDREL\04057-80\EBC\8EBC69.dwg

                    The trouble starts when I try to open AutoCAD using this string. For some reason, Alpha gives me a weird message and my application is not starting. However it works perfectly if I use: "W:\MFG_ENG\MANDREL"+CHR(92)+ALLTRIM(Tool_No)+CHR(92)+ALLTRIM(Dwg_No)+".DWG". The trouble begins when I add FileFind.get_recurse.

                      Re: Can't open non Alpha file

                      Arkady,

                      May I ask, again, for you to show us the exact code you are using to try to open the autoCad file?

                      Using vers 9 the following sequence works just fine. It opens the designated text file in notepad as expected.

                      Code:
                      my_folder = "D:\downloads"
                      my_file = "nextpayment.txt"
                      sys_open(filefind.get_recurse(my_folder, my_file))

                      In this case the code I'm showing works correctly even though the TXT file is in a subfolder of the "D:\downloads" directory.

                      Additional questions for you:

                      a) if you put the drawing on a different drive do you see the same result?

                      b) if you double click the drawing file will autoCad open for you automatically?

                      c) is there anything unusual about the W drive on your system? is it removable? a CD? What?

                        Re: Can't open non Alpha file

                        Post the code you are using. It appears the filefind.get_recurse() is working just fine as it returned the file you where looking for. However, making an assumption, you are then feeding this return value to another function that calls the Autocad program with the filefind.get_recurse() returned value as an argument. Again making another assumption the filefind.get_recurse() is returning additional control characters that is causing the issue. You will most like have to clean up the returned value from filefind.get_recurse() before using it as an argument.
