Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    http_get()

    Dang, just full of fun today. Args not working, iPads not working, and I can't get http_get() working.

    Assuming a good value for url here (and I know it's correct - not up for discussion, based on security keys and all that stuff that I'm not interested in trying to discuss here) I'm trying to retrieve, in this case, a .jpg from an API as such:

    Code:
    response = http_get(url)
    save_to_file(response.body, "c:\mypicture.jpg")
    But, the file I'm getting is of unknown format which suggests I'm doing something wrong.

    My question is limited: Is there anything wrong with this syntax or my expectation that the file should be the response.body ?

    Re: http_get()

    blob to file or similar required? I'd have to test. I know a GET is limited to 1024 or 2048 bytes in the request, not sure about the response(body).

      Steve,

      I use http_download_bg to accomplish downloading a file, works great. See the wiki/doc

        Re: http_get()

        Still not there.

        The API provider says the file is contained in the response.body, but darned if I can make it happen.

        Frank, I've tried http_download_bg() but because I'm getting the file from an API by submitting a lot of other information, and not naming the file as shown in the doc example, it doesn't work.

          Steve,

          gave it a quick try here with a pdf: same problem. Has to do something with MIME types I guess

            Re: http_get()

            Many days and hours later, I still can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I know the URL is correct, so no need to focus on that. What's wrong with my syntax or use of this? It does save a file of 1 KB (should be a little bigger I think) that says "invalid file format" when I try to open it. And response.error text has no value.

            Code:
            dim response as p

            url = "https://api-content.dropbox.com/1/files/dropbox/photos/Sample%20Album%2fPensive%20Parakeet.jpg?"
            url = url + dbx_signature()

            response = http_get(url)

            save_to_file(response.BODY, "c:\a5webroot\test_v11\parakeet.jpg")

            ?"Error: " + response.error_text + "<br>"

            ?"file saved " + time()

                Re: http_get()

                replace save_to_file() with this:

                filename = "c:\a5webroot\test_v11\parakeet.jpg"
                file.from_blob(filaneme,response.body)

                  Steve,

                  How can you download from an https (secure) url using http protocol ? I don't think that will work

                    Re: http_get()

                    Frank is right, you need to add parameters to your http_get() function to allow it to grab from ssl:

                    Example: http_get("https://www.sqst.com","",443,0,.f.,.f.)

                      Re: http_get()

                      Yup yup Steve, that was it, I thank you. Why does it take a dozen hours to learn these things? I didn't need to add anything to the API - it covers all the stuff, manages the https, etc.

                      FYI, I'm finishing up a DropBox integration for a customer, and we're going to turn it into an add-on available at the IADN store.

                        You managed to answer my question about http_get() years before I knew to ask the question and because of information that would be greatly appreciated in the published documentation.
