Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to open Dialog from Xbasic

    I have looked for a day and cannot figure out how to open a dialog and populate the controls from Xbasic within another dialog.

    I cannot use a button because I am writing Xbasic code in the dialogValidate event of a Dialog that will check to see if the user had properly punched out previously. If not, I want another Dialog to open that is populated and gives the user the opportunity to correct and submit, then return to the original Dialog and finish submitting that information.

    I thought this might be something in Action Scripting and have dutifully checked this forum and alphapedia with no luck.

    Thanks for the help.

    Andrew,
    I am not near a development machine, but you could try this:
    1) Create a button (you can then hide it) in your first dialog that opens the second dialog (based on an argument filter) as you need it. Make sure this works first.
    2) Then in dialogValidate, set a state variable that flags whether to trigger the dialog popup (e.g. dim mypopup as L = .T.)
    3) In afterdialog Validate, test for the state flag and if true, then do not save the record, instead return javascript that clicks the button (something like {dialog.object}.buttonClick('BUTTON_1'); )

    This should get you started at least....

      Re: How to open Dialog from Xbasic

      I think Andy is on the right track.
      I do something like this in one of my dialogs.
      I believe the code I use to click the button is:
      Code:
      $('{dialog.ComponentName}.V.R1.YOURBUTTONID').click();

        Jinx, the dialog's buttonClick function is Alpha's handy-dandy shortcut for manually writing out the element id and calling the click function.

          Re: How to open Dialog from Xbasic

          Thank you Andy,

          I follow your logic, but as usual cannot make the specifics work. You are obviously sending javascript from xbasic, so I assume I would need something like:

          a5_run_javascript("{dialog.object}.buttonClick('BUTTON_3');")

          from the xbasic in the afterDialogValidate event. I have not hidden the button, and it works correctly when manually clicked. Now just have to figure how to tell xbasic how to click hit.

          In a similar vein, I have spent all afternoon trying to get an 'alert' or 'message box' to open from this same xbasic code. Would I do something similar by creating an alert in javascript in a button and hide the button on the dialog? Seems like there out to be a simpler way to do directly from xbasic in the afterDialogValidate event. I find all kind of documentation for desktop or javascript, but need the information window to come out of xbasic.

          Thanks for the help...

            Andrew, you need to return your javascript by setting the e.javascript property in afterDialogValidate.
            e.g.
            e.javascript = "alert('hello');"

            or in your case:
            e.javascript = "{dialog.object}.buttonClick('BUTTON_3');"

              Re: How to open Dialog from Xbasic

              Just an added note... I hide buttons to call dialogs or grids from Xbasic a lot and found that you should not "Hide" the button with the Hide property or it won't work. You should use the Client Side Show/Hide Expression to 'hide' it. I use 1=2 as my expression so it will be hidden.

                Re: How to open Dialog from Xbasic

                Thank you Andy. That worked great. I never would have discovered the e.javascript way of doing it. This brings up my next question:

                In what scenario/use would you use A5_Run_JavaScript() ?

                I would have bet my left mouse button that A5_Run_JavaScript() was what was needed in some form for my problem.

                Thank you Carol for taking care of my next headache as that was exactly what I was going to do next.

                  Re: How to open Dialog from Xbasic

                  Don't know about A5_Run_JavaScript, never used it. In any case, because of the event-driven nature of how xBasic and javascript interact between server-side and client-side, I can't really think of a need for such a function in v11.

                    How would you use this within a dialog. I am trying to do this within a on change for one of my fields in a dialog to open another dialog. After you set e.javascript how do you execute it.

                    Thank You

                      Re: How to open Dialog from Xbasic

                      e.javascript is executed when the event that it's called in is executed. For instance, in the afterDialogValidate event as outlined in Andy's post above. e.javascript sends back whatever you put in it after that event fires.

                      If you are putting it into an onChange event for a field you would simply put something like this in the onChange event iself:
                      Code:
                      {dialog.object}.buttonClick('BUTTON_1');
