Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Display calculated fields based on user inputs: Looking for Resources

I am in day 3 of my evaluation and still learning how to drink from the fire hose. I can find resources and am able to perfectly replicate results from tutorials, but I want to do something a little different and I am either not able to synthesize what I have learned, or I am missing some key ingredient.

Most of the examples use grids to show a bunch of data, but I want to show data from multiple tables, and multiple calculated fields that use multiple tables.

I am building an application to ask 3 questions in the form of drop down lists.
    1. Select an Address (from property table)
    2. Select a construction project (from construction table)
    3. Select a financing method (from finance table)

Based on the answer to these 3 questions I have a BUNCH of calculations I want to show.
I have the Dialog drop downs built using the tables to populate the options, but now I need to display things like:
Construction cost = (sq ft from address table * cost per sq ft from construction table * loanrate from financing table)

I hope to be able to change any of the 3 inputs and have the calculated fields update on the fly. I believe that I need to do an ajax call to update a grid where I am displaying calculated fields, but I have not found a tutorial that speaks to this, at least not where all of these different elements are combined using drop downs and stuff. I see a lot of tutorials where javascript and ajax code is being used, but I am not much of a developer, and I am considering this product because it claims you don't need to write code, so I have high hopes :D

It seems like it would be a simple challenge. User has 3 inputs and the results are displayed in real time - almost like a loan calculator.

I understand that I may need to write code, or at least copy from a tutorial, but I am not found the right resources to learn what I need in order to make this happen.

Can anyone point me to a video or collection of videos that specifically describes how to display a list of calculated fields based on many tables?

    Thanks so much!

Re: Display calculated fields based on user inputs: Looking for Resources

I also recently discovered a problem when creating a grid to display the results. I am planning on using multiple calculated fields for example:
    buildablesqft = sqrt(landarea)
constcost = (buildablesqft * 34) (although the number 34 should really be selected from another table, but baby steps right?)

When I try to enter this into the calculated fields box i get an error that says "Calculated values can not reference other calculated values. Please correct all instances where Calc -> apppears."

I am thinking I need to somehow put all the values from these tables and put them into variables? ugh please tell me I am missing the easy way. :D
