Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How do I force a new session if user uses new browser tab?

I use session variables to determine the proper connection strings for my multiple clients. Some of my clients have multiple databases and thus may choose from them and the proper session variable is established. This has meant that some clients attempt to use another browser tab to open a different company, which then causes the connection string in their first browser tab to be reset due to the session variable change.

If above makes any sense to someone, my question is whether there is a way to force a new session and also keep the old session? I'm not sure I'm phrasing this right, but maybe someone will know what I'm talking about.

You cannot create multiple sessions from multiple tabs in the same browser. If you want individual tabs to be able to work on different companies as you have explained, you would need to use page variables or some other mechanism instead of session variables.

a poor man's way of doing this is to have multiple browser programs on the computer..

FireFox, IE, Safari, Opera, Chrome.... etc..

Actually, I would prefer that my users do NOT open their different companies in multiple tabs in their browsers. They just do it anyway thinking they'll be able to quickly jump back and forth between their companies. I have to use session variables to establish their connections because I am using the Dynamic Connection features for multiple tenants. I guess I'll just have to educate them not to do that multiple browser tabs thing.

P.S. - Alan, thanks for that tip about multiple browsers. I suppose I could give it as a hint to my users that think they want to have more than one company open.

If you wish to stay with session variables, try using unique names for each application.

              Hi Carol,

An answer to your original question i don't have. But:

i achieve that by forcing a logout before they can choose another application in the same browser. Just sent them through an intermediate logout page before they can login.

I need it because i use a setup with multiple published projects, sharing 1 database and served with 1 was.

You made my wheels start turning, Ger... In my app they click a button to 'Open' their selected company, and that's when the session variable with their connection string gets set. I'm thinking I should check to see if that session variable has anything in it and react appropriately if it does. I'm assuming that if user closes their browser, the session variable will no longer have anything in it? I have a Logoff link that should be clearing those out, so this might force them to start using that link, or face having to close their browser. Guess I'll go start testing that concept. Any hints or suggestions about this idea would be appreciated.

Re: How do I force a new session if user uses new browser tab?

                  Ok my solution in brief:

At normal login (at index.a5w) i start with brute killing a session (even if it doesn't exist)

'entry page to prevent multiple sessions from 1 machine (else problem with sharing sessionvariable for different applications for 1 user
                  session.reset()
This will kill the current session. If one does this in a new tab, the session in the other browser tab is ended.

From there a redirect happens to the real loginpage (login.a5w)
at that page i explicityl kill a crucial session variable, which forces the system to reload a system_start.a5w page which initializes all sessionvariables
just in case somebody want to be smart an bypass my index page :-)

' Explicitly delete session variable below to force the system to re-read system_start.a5w after every login.

                  If variable_exists("session.__protected__rid") then
                  delete session.__protected__rid
                  else
                  'do nothing
                  end if

Direct linking to a another page is no problem: one stays within the current application. If one tries to startup a page which doesn't belong to the project it will be blocked by the page security settings.

Maybe the above method is not 'hacker proof' that's not my goal. But until now it prevents accidentally login to another application without closing the current one.

Re: How do I force a new session if user uses new browser tab?

I just decided to force them to use my Logoff link which clears those session variables, OR if they did not use it, then I will force them to close their browser. Used Ger's suggestion of If variable_exists("session.xxxx") to determine if the session variable with the connection string exists. I think this will do just what I want it to do! Seems to be working. Thanks so much, all (and Ger, especially).

Sorry for resurrecting this post, but I notice the AA 12.4.4 documentation says the xbasic command, "session.reset()", suggested in the above posts, is now obsolete!

The documentation recommends using the xbasic command, "Context.Response.Clear()", instead.

The descriptions for the two commands seem a little different.

I tested "Context.Response.Clear()" on server-side and that did not clear my session vars, but "session.clear()" did work.

Also, I noticed the documentation says to use "session.clear" (yes, docs are missing the parenthesis) , but it links to "Context.Response.Clear()" documentation.
