Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

                  Peter,

Do not try convincing us you are Chinese!

This is similar to the machine I used in 1971. I think the one I used was a little earlier. Note: there was no mouse and no windows and usually broken.

My very first PC system ... circa 1979 ... a Rair Black Box (BEFORE the IBM PC!)
                    Cost: UK Pounds 2,500!!!

                    http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?c=454

The OS was CP/M along with a COBOL compiler from a rinky-dink outfit called "Micro Soft". (If ONLY I knew then what I know now!)

Data storage? ... 2 x 5.25" floppy disks. (Floppy disks that actually flopped!)

Ahh .. those were the days!

So you actually already had the luxury of TWO floppy disks? No need to disk-jockey to make copies of disks...... how nice! High Tech start in the business.......

Yes, but the floppies were expensive: only 256 KB each (that KILObytes!) ... 30 UK Pounds ($45) for a box of 10! ... and SLOWWWW!

And to copy files from one drive to the other ... "PIP" ... (Peripheral Interchange Program!)

Aside: The CP/M OS was written by Gary Kildall, whose very foolish wife refused to sign a non-disclosure agreement when IBM came a-knocking, seeking an OS for their soon-to-be-released "personal computer".

IBM instead went to a very young, but very savvy computer nerd, Bill Gates, who ... with a MASTER STROKE! ... bought the rights to another operating system (QDOS ... a "Quick and Dirty Operating System" written by a Tim Paterson) for just $50,000 and then re-licensed it to IBM ... but RETAINING THE RIGHTS to sell MS-DOS separately!

The rest, they say, is history!

(8" floppies would be classified as an "upgrade", Alan).

5.25's???? ~ First ones I saw/used in junior-high school were 7+ inch & "very-floppy." They were next to a huge line printer with green/white paper..... (DEC?)
(They were replaced shortly thereafter with Apple II's.)

Ahhh, "cutting teeth" in the late 70's. It was 1979 for me too as I recall, during Junior High... I'll never forget my first CS teacher who didn't like me. I knew more than he did, and as a result class was difficult (to say the least.). I built a game (Tempest ROUGH, very ROUGH clone) on the Apple II and got an "F" because "it didn't work." My mom showed up for a meeting (after school) and I had to tell the teacher it needed to be played on the color monitor instead of the black/white or black/green ones. Grade instantly went from an "F" to an "A." ~ Great way to finish off the year making that teacher look totally incompetent in front of everyone including "mom!"

It's all about the "framework." (I suppose an "a5-induced" hard drive crash is now in order?)
