Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to turn page variables into session variables in a grid

    I used to know this, but I have now (blissfully) forgotten how it works.

    i have a grid in an A5 page. I call the page with a statement something like this: www.myserver.com:4080/testpage.a5w?fid=1&eid=2

    Now I want to use the fid and eid values in my xbasic code, such as:
    Code:
    select * from testfile where familyid = fid and eventid = eid
    how (again) can I access the parameters that were passed in the web call?

    Thanks!

    You already know that fid and eid are page variables just by being in the URL. Next thing to do is on the Query section setup Arguments, one for each page var. Your resulting statement will be like this:

    select * from testfile where familyid = :fid and eventid = :eid

      Re: How to turn page variables into session variables in a grid

      Thank you for your reply. I have some previous code that is failing for some reason, and it references e.session.eventid and e.session.familyid -variables. The web page call doesn't use the "session." -nomenclature to make them session variables, but somehow my code used to work until an A5 update at some point.

      So, in order to keep the old code running, should I write a code snippet at the top of each xbasic function, something like this:

      Code:
      	if .NOT. variable_exists("e.session.eventid")
      		e.session.eventid = request.variables.eid
      	end if
      Tried that, didn't work

      So my next effort would be:

      Code:
      	if .NOT. variable_exists("e.session.eventid")
      		e.session.eventid = :eid
      	end if
      Somehow I don't think that will work either. I've looked high and low in videos and help files for a clear explanation of how to use parameters passed into a page within the page specifically in version 11, but I didn't find anything. I'm a bit lost with the scoping and interplay of session and page variables. Again.

      How do you handle this in your code?

        Re: How to turn page variables into session variables in a grid

        I finally found the answer to my question through trial and error (the documentation, yet again, was less than helpful...):

        I put this code in Server-side Events OnGridExecute:

        Code:
        if variable_exists("Request.Variables.fid")
        	Session.familyid = Request.Variables.fid
        end if
        if variable_exists("Request.Variables.eid")
        	Session.eventid = Request.Variables.eid
        end if
        With this code insertion I can now reference e.session.eventid and e.session.familyid anywhere in my XBasic code within this particular component. <LIKE!>

          Try session.familyid without the "e." and see if that works as well--if I remember correctly, I believe e. (and e.rv.) has been phased out since an earlier version and will not be supported in some later release (v12? IIS?, etc?).

            Will do. I also remember reading somewhere that e.session and e.rv are going away in the not-too-distant future. I suppose there are some really good reasons for this kind of breaking change...
