Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dynamically create and execute equal statement from two seperate list boxes

    I would like to replace these hard coded lines with the same code, but built dynamically from the two following lists.

    Hard coded code:
    Code:
    tbl.vt_name = alltrim(rec.name)
    tbl.vt_name2 = alltrim(rec.contact)
    tbl.vt_pseudo = alltrim(rec.pseudo)
    tbl.vt_pword = alltrim(rec.password1)
    tbl.vt_pword2 = alltrim(rec.password2)
    tbl.vt_pword3 = alltrim(rec.password3)
    tbl.vt_notes = alltrim(rec.notes)
    List one:
    Code:
    vcTbl_Fields_Names = <<%a%
    vt_name
    vt_name2
    vt_pseudo
    vt_pword1
    vt_pword2
    vt_pword3
    vt_notes
    %a%
    List two:
    Code:
    vcxDlg_Fields = <<%b%
    name
    contact
    pseudo
    password1
    password2
    password3
    notes
    %b%
    Here is a similar statement which I can run built from a single list.

    Code:
    *for_each(foo,evaluate_template("rec."+foo+"=\"\" "),vcTbl_Fields)
    What I'm looking for is something like:

    Pseudo code
    for each line in list one
    execute tbl.first item in list one = alltrim(rec.first item in list two)
    execute tbl.second item in list one = alltrim(rec.second item in list two)
    execute tbl.third item in list one = alltrim(rec.third item in list two)

    I'm just looking for a little nudge in the right direction.

    Thanks,

    Nudge this way. I will put into practice myself and let you know.
    Code:
    VCOUNTER=1
    for each nam in vcTbl_Fields_Names
      eval("tbl."+nam)=ALLTRIM(WORD(vcxDlg_Fields,vcounter,CRLF()))
      vcounter=vcounter+1
    next
    Now you've got me started - I've previously not bothered to work out this method, and have hand coded each field.
    I will test it out (unless you do first, let me know) to see that it works. It should, i tested in parts with vars in the interactive editor. It doesn't require evaluate_template I don't think - because you are not declaring variables.
    I will try it out tomorrow - its 2:00am now

      Ray,

      I took a look at this earlier. What about the alltrim(rec. )?
      There can be only one.

        I added it minutes before you posted.

          The original post called for

          tbl.vt_name = alltrim(rec.name)
          There can be only one.

            Thank you very much. Worked perfectly.

            Code:
            dim vnCounter as N = 1
            for each nam in vcTbl_Fields_Names
            	eval("tbl."+nam)=Alltrim(eval("rec."+Word(vcxDlg_Fields,vncounter,crlf())) )
            	vnCounter=vnCounter+1
            next

              Yes
              I see the complete picture. Just out of interest.
              Are you using this for data interchange between tables using tbl.record_to_vars method or some other nefarious occupation?

                Re: Dynamically create and execute equal statement from two seperate list boxes

                I actually didn't read it all Stan, (or Ronald sneaked more in after I started)
                so I enthusiastically carried on like those were string data to assign to the dot (or table) pointer.
                But it was a just a nudge Ron asked for anyway.
                (hey, and thanks for leaving space to re-look at it, I know you could have just done it!)

                  I was tired of recreating simple xdialogs to view/edit data to a single table. I expanded the capabilities of an example posted by Tom Cone and made it totally generic. It's now a function. I just pass the arguments to the function and it's done.

                  Thanks

                      Ron, your function sounds like it might make a useful addition to the code archive forum. Care to document its use, and then submit it? Thanks.

                        That would be really great Ron.
