Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Argument in SQL WHERE clause locks up Alpha 5 v11

The argument in the following SQL statement for my v11 grid causes Alpha to lockup whenever I attempt to go back into the "Edit Sql in Query Builder" button. If I remove the WHERE clause containing the argument, it will bring up the builder correctly. Although, it does load much more slowly than normal. I have many other similar grids, some with much larger SELECT statements, using this same argument and have had no problems.

If I add the WHERE clause and Execute the query, it returns data properly in the Preview window.
But, if I close the SQL genie and then try to come back into it, it locks up.

I have created started over with a completely new grid and rebuilt it from scratch and ended up with the same problem.

    SELECT workflowtracking.pkid, workflowtracking.cid, workflowtracking.empid, suffix.suffixclassid, Concatenate( If(employees.firstname IS NULL , '', employees.firstname) , If(employees.middlename IS NULL , '', Concatenate(' ', employees.middlename) ) , If(employees.lastname IS NULL , '', Concatenate(' ', employees.lastname) ) , If(suffix.suffix IS NULL , '', Concatenate(', ', suffix.suffix) ) ) AS EmployeeName, workflowtracking.orderid, workflowtracking.deptid, department.departmentenglish, workflowtracking.description, workflowtracking.rollid, workflowtracking.timestamp, workflowtracking.moddatetime, workflowtracking.modempid
    FROM (workflowtracking workflowtracking
    LEFT OUTER JOIN department department
    ON workflowtracking.cid = department.cid AND workflowtracking.deptid = department.deptid
    LEFT OUTER JOIN (employees employees
    LEFT OUTER JOIN suffix suffix
    ON employees.cid = suffix.cid AND employees.suffixclassid = suffix.suffixclassid )
    ON workflowtracking.cid = employees.cid AND workflowtracking.empid = employees.empid )
    WHERE workflowtracking.cid = :companyid

    Thanks for looking.......

    Hi Andrew
Try creating a view for your Employees table with your CONCATENATE expression, then LEFT JOIN that view in Alpha Query Builder.

      Thanks Edhy,

I do not have much experience with views. I know that you cannot update/insert/delete from them, at least in PostgreSQL anyway. Will I be able to do that if I try your above suggestion since it is joining a view?

Here is an example of a longer SELECT statement in the same Alpha project that has 3 CONCATENATE expressions with the same problem argument and it works fine:

      SELECT contacts.cid, contacts.contactid, contacts.contactclassid, suffix.suffixclassid, contactclassification.classification, Concatenate( If(contacts.firstname IS NULL , '', contacts.firstname) , If(contacts.middlename IS NULL , '', Concatenate(' ', contacts.middlename) ) , If(contacts.lastname IS NULL , '', Concatenate(' ', contacts.lastname) ) , If(contacts.lastname IS NULL AND contacts.company IS NOT NULL , contacts.company, If(contacts.company IS NULL , '', Concatenate(' - ', contacts.company) ) ) ) AS ContactName, Concatenate( If(contacts.address1 IS NULL , '', contacts.address1) , If(contacts.address2 IS NULL , '', Concatenate(', ', contacts.address2) ) , If(contacts.city IS NULL , '', Concatenate(' ', contacts.city) ) , If(contacts.st IS NULL , '', Concatenate(', ', contacts.st) ) , If(contacts.zipcode IS NULL , '', Concatenate(' ', contacts.zipcode) ) ) AS Address, contacts.empid, Concatenate( If(employees.firstname IS NULL , '', employees.firstname) , If(employees.middlename IS NULL , '', Concatenate(' ', employees.middlename) ) , If(employees.lastname IS NULL , '', Concatenate(' ', employees.lastname) ) , If(suffix.suffix IS NULL , '', Concatenate(', ', suffix.suffix) ) ) AS EmployeeName, contacts.moddatetime, contacts.modempid
      FROM (contacts contacts
      INNER JOIN (employees employees
      LEFT OUTER JOIN suffix suffix
      ON employees.cid = suffix.cid AND employees.suffixclassid = suffix.suffixclassid )
      ON contacts.cid = employees.cid AND contacts.empid = employees.empid
      INNER JOIN contactclassification contactclassification
      ON contacts.cid = contactclassification.cid AND contacts.contactclassid = contactclassification.contactclassid )
      WHERE contacts.cid = :companyid
      ORDER BY contacts.contactid DESC

I never used PostgreSQL, but in that case try submitting a bug report to Alpha, since the problem seems to be in the Query Builder parser after you saved it and not able to parse it back when opening while the SQL is valid and working fine. It could be something simple for them to fix if they can properly duplicate the issue with your SQL statement. Be sure to include either a sample database that matches your Query so they can test properly and faster.

          So get this......
I started to gather my information this morning to file a bug report and I looked at the grid one more time and noticed it was a lot more responsive than before. Then on a whim, I went ahead and added the WHERE clause to the SQL statement and now have no problems at all.

Saved it and went back in several times since and have had no problem. Had rebooted the computer several times the last couple of days and had done disc scans, etc during the problem phase of which nothing was found or made any difference to the problem.

I have not updated Windows XP or Alpha or anything else on the system since yesterday.....nothing has changed, yet today it works fine as opposed to the two previous days!#%#@!!

I am glad I live in Illinois where there are not many cliffs to find and jump off. At least I saved Selwyn and company some time and prevented me looking like a nitwit again.

            Hey Andrew,
I am glad you got it working somehow, probably there was an invisible character or something like that in the Query that may have caused its parser logic to fail.
