Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

To explain this further, I decided to make my URL field into a regular type-in field and populate that field with the a5.get_path and ui_get_file commands shown above. So the populating of the field is done with a button for this purpose. I then created a button to open the link by simply having the "open a non-Alpha Five file" action. Works fine. Just wondered if there is a way to have the populated field where the link is located be the "button" that opens the non-Alpha Five file. By "button", I mean that clicking anywhere in/on the field executes the opening of the file.

    Thanks.

clicking anywhere in/on the field executes the opening of the file.
There is no onclick event for a form field object. There is an onarrive event that will fire when you give the field focus.

This will, of course, fire whether you click in the field or tab into it or otherwise arrive.

The main issue with this is what you say in your last sentence, that it will fire whether you tab in or otherwise arrive -- would lead to unintended firings. The OnClick would be the right approach but, as you say, there is no OnClick event.

        Thanks for your input.

The OnFlyover may have some validity for this. I'm not sure if this will lead to a lot of false firings. I may test it to see what my client things. Maybe there's a way to embed within the logic whether there was a click. If so, this would be a back door into an OnClick for a field on a form.

If you are populating the type in field with code as you indicate and the user doesn't need to manually enter values to it, you can overlay the type in field with a user object and code the onmouse event of the user control.

Wow! What an interesting idea. I'll try it. Thanks.

Here's the answer. I took the button I already created for the purpose of opening the link and placed it over the field. No OnClick event is needed. Just the OnPush will do it since it is the original button positioned on top of the field, transparent, no border, same size. Works like a charm. Thanks for triggering all this extra creative energy to come up with the ultimate solution. Sometimes you need a push to think outside the field ... I mean box.

Let me add this additional note in case anyone is considering using this approach (button over field). You don't get the opportunity to copy and paste the content of the field into, say, an email since the field content is covered by the button that fires the opening of the link. This becomes a reason for using the URL field as the container for the link since clicking at the right side of the field fires the opening but selecting the content of the field does not fire. Another idea is to cover the right side of the field with the button, using an icon with text, and still achieving the end result. Yes, that sounds like the way to go.

                      What about a HotSpot?

That's a good idea. It wouldn't work for this situation since I need the content of the field that stores the UNC path to be available for copy and paste as well as being click-ready. Having the click button at the right makes both options available.

                        Thanks.

I believe that you will find, that the operations you have placed on your button, will transfer to a HotSpot.
When I do links to other files I sometimes have really, really long strings.
What I tend to do is to have an Alias - a field which describes what the content actually is without all the
                          N:\Directorate of Community and Social Services\SCIP\Scip Portfolio 101\Project\Data migration\Task List\Task 102_099_132
                          Stuff in the field.
The alias for this one is Missing ID's.
The long string can be hidden on the form, and using the Copy to Clipboard feature as part of the process, you can still pick it up, and also the Paste feature works for me too.
