Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    In a linked grid, how do you pass values from parent to child?

    .
    Hi,
    Using the Properties - Linked Grids/Content - Has linked grids or
    other content
    option, I have linked a Teachers grid to a Students
    subgrid, so that when a teacher is selected in the main grid, all his
    students are shown in the subgrid.

    In the Students subgrid I would like to show the teacher's name
    together with the number of students that teacher has, in the
    Properties - Customization - 'Total records' message text area.

    The Teacher's table has two fields: Teacher_id and Teacher_name.

    Thank you for your help,
    Felix

      Govindan,
      Thank you for your help. Video 69 from Alpha Five v10 seems to fit exactly what I want
      but for some reason it does not work. The child grid is at fault, but I do not know why,
      since I have replicated the video (adjusted to my situation).

      I'll keep on ...

        Re: In a linked grid, how do you pass values from parent to child?

        .
        Thanks to Govindan, here is how it is done:

        First see video 69 of Alpha Five v10.

        Imagine a linked grid that links a main Teachers grid to a Students subgrid. When you select a teacher by clicking on his row, all his students are listed in the subgrid. Additionally, in the Students subgrid header (in reality, the Total Records message text area) the total records corresponding to that teacher is displayed. So far, as usual.

        Now, what we also want is to include the selected teachers name in this Students subgrids header. There are two ways to select a row: whenever the grid is rendered it highlights/selects the first row and, second, when you click on a row.

        Teachers grid (parent)
        Let us suppose the teachers name is in the fullname field. When a Teachers row is selected, we want to get the value in that rows fullname field and place it into a variable, say, TEACHERNAME, that well later use in the child Students grid.

        Every time the Teachers grid is rendered (on webpage initialization and when you navigate the grid), the first row of the grid is automatically selected. We want to get the value of the first rows fullname field when the grid is rendered. In the Teachers component:

        Properties Javascript System Events - onGridRender:
        TEACHERNAME = {grid.Object}.getValue('G','FULLNAME',1);

        NOTE: G stands for grid, the fullname field must be capitalized and 1 corresponds to the first row.

        You can also select a row by clicking on it (the onMouseUp event ):

        Properties  Javascript Row Events  onMouseUp:
        TEACHERNAME = {grid.Object}.getValue('G','FULLNAME',{Grid.RowNumber});

        Student grid (child)
        In our linked grid, when a row is selected in the main Teachers grid Alpha Five displays the corresponding Students in the subgrid. Because of the Javascript events we have just coded in the main Teacher grid, we have created a TEACHERNAME variable, loaded with the selected row's fullname. Lets place this variable in the Students components Total Records message text area.

        Properties  Javascript System Events  onGridRender:
        $('E1').innerHTML = TEACHERNAME;

        Properties Customization Total Records message text:
        Students of <span id="E1"></span>:&nbsp;<strong>{Total_Records}</strong>

        That's all there's to it!

        Regards,
        Felix
